PITCH IN FOR A MOVE
Posted on: Thu 15 May 2014
As the curtain falls on the 2013/14 season, one important transfer has
already taken place - that of the Stamford Bridge pitch to a new home at
Aldershot Town.
The Chelsea pitch, in place for the previous 10 years, has been removed to
be replaced over the summer with a new surface, but rather than going to
waste it has been donated to Football Conference side Aldershot, whose ESS
Stadium regularly hosts Chelsea Under-21 and UEFA Youth League fixtures.
Transported via lorry, the pitch is sure to make an impact on the
Surrey-Hampshire border, replacing the previous surface which had been in
place at Aldershot since 1926.
Chelsea FC Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said: 'It is good for us to be able
to help out our friends at Aldershot, who have been very accommodating in
hosting our development sides. I hope the Stamford Bridge pitch will bring
them luck while allowing our young players the opportunity to continue
their progress on a first-class surface.'
Aldershot Town Chairman Shahid Azeem added: 'It works for us and it works
for Chelsea because many of their youth players come and play here. They
enjoy it here and hopefully it's an extension to Stamford Bridge. The fact
that some of the best players in the world have played on this surface and
it's now at Aldershot is unbelievable.'
Chelsea's development sides will continue to play some fixtures at
Aldershot next season, allowing local supporters the opportunity to see
our stars of the future up close.
Chelsea legend Tommy Langley, who also represented the Shots, said: 'It's
a proper ground. It's a ground that has always had its own little quirks.
The players will enjoy the different atmosphere and get a bit of a buzz
from playing in an enclosed ground as well.
'It also gives loads of people the chance to see the young players - if
you look at the surrounding towns, as far afield as Basingstoke, Farnham,
Guildford and Bracknell, it is a massive Chelsea area and it gives those
fans a chance to see the boys play, close up. They can see who is up and
coming in the Chelsea Academy - there is obviously great coverage on
Chelsea TV, but they can also get up close and personal by going to a
proper ground and seeing them first hand.'
