NEW ROLES IN ACADEMY

Posted on: Mon 09 Jun 2014

After a season of unprecedented success, the Chelsea Academy will be
undergoing some changes in personnel this summer.

The Blues lifted both the Barclays Under-21 Premier League title and the
FA Youth Cup in 2014; the latter for a third time in five years, and will
be aiming for similar achievements in the next campaign, but will be doing
so without Under-21 coach Dermot Drummy, who will be taking on a new
challenge in the club's international coaching department.

The position of international head coach, a new role within Chelsea FC to
support specific aspects of Chelsea's growing number of overseas
partnerships, will draw on Drummy's expertise and many years of coaching
experience.

The ultimate aim is to expand the knowledge and experience of all coaches
from the Chelsea Foundation through to our soccer schools and elite
partners such as Guangzhou R&F in China and our Super Clubs network in
America.

Drummy's addition to the international programme will ensure it continues
to expand and engage the wider grass roots football community, a goal our
Foundation coaching staff have worked hard to achieve.

Upon the announcement, Dermot said: 'I've had a great seven years, I'm
really happy with what I've done and I've worked with some fantastic staff
and young players.

'I've also worked with managers like Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti,
and it's been a brilliant learning curve.

'I hope I can now carry that work on for others. I like working with
people and it's something I like to think comes naturally to me. This new
role will be a great challenge and I look forward to working and teaching
in a new environment.'

It will be a big change for Drummy, who has been in charge of the most
senior of our development squads since 2011, having previously spent two
years as youth team coach in which time we lifted the FA Youth Cup for the
first time in 49 years.

He originally joined Chelsea from Arsenal, where he had spent a decade
coaching, as Under-16 coach in 2007, assisting Paul Clement on the
Under-18s' run to the FA Youth Cup final in the same season.

This season Drummy led the Blues' second string to the Under-21 league
title, guiding us past Manchester City and Manchester United in the
play-offs.

Chelsea's international development manager Ian Woodroffe said: 'I am
delighted Dermot has taken this decision, I am sure his experience and
knowledge of the game, and the club, will be an important asset in
supporting and developing our global coaching programmes.

'It is an exciting time as we continue to develop and expand into new
territories and Dermot's appointment into this role shows how serious
Chelsea is about football development around the world.'

To accommodate Drummy's changing role, Adi Viveash will step up from the
Under-18s to coach the Under-21s, while Under-16 coach Joe Edwards will
now take charge of the Under-18s.

Viveash had been in his previous role since July 2011, lifting the FA
Youth Cup twice, while Edwards, a former Chelsea schoolboy, had also been
assisting the youth team and has been a part of the Academy coaching staff
since 2004.

Head of youth development Neil Bath said: 'Dermot joined us seven years
ago, initially as Under-16 coach looking after the 12-to-16-year-olds and
was promoted to youth coach before becoming Under-21s coach.

'In that time not only has he helped win the FA Youth Cup and the Under-21
title, he has worked extremely hard for the Academy to add to the
technical development of our players.

'In recent months we have discussed the next challenge in Dermot's career
development and we were only too pleased for him to make the move at this
time and take his career forward.

'In his place, I have the utmost confidence that Adi and Joe will be
successful in their new roles, and I look forward to another exciting
season for the Academy.'
