Hi everyone! This is my very first post, and it’s a match report from the
Hingis x Kournikova exhibition. I just got back from Copacabana beach where I
saw the entire match. Hope you enjoy it.

Before the match started there was a “celebrity” doubles match between
(Kiefer/Caca x Campos/Pizonia). This was a very boring match due to the low
level of Caca and Pizonia (both brazilian drivers), but Kiefer showed he is
indeed extremely talented - with some amazing and funny shots. It was great to
see him play.

Right after the doubles match, it began to rain and the singles was delayed for
about an hour. Before the match started, we could see Martina and Ana hanging
loose, chatting next to the court, and even dancing a little bit while
listening to hip-hop. They both looked very happy and friendly.

At 10pm they started the warm up, which was longer than usual, due to the
conditions of the court, and it was weird but Kournikova asked Hingis to change
sides 3 times during warm up – at this point part of the crowd booed her,
anxious for the start of the match, and she responded asking for more booing
with her hands. Not very nice though.

After a while Kournikova got some towels herself and started helping some ball
boys on drying the court (Hingis ended up helping too) – it was funny to watch.

From the start of the match, Kournikova all of a sudden didn’t look in a good
mood. In fact she was not doing any effort to get into the match, and Hingis
easily got the lead.

They have a pretty similar style of play, with Kournikova hitting a little more
flat and Hingis a little more spin. Hingis racquet looks more control oriented
and dampened than Kournikova’s, who looked very skinny, but hits with decent
pace.

The key points for the entire match where the unforced errors (Ana had millions)
and the 1st serves (again Ana had absolutely no pace and consistency). Hingis
was ok but I am afraid she might get in trouble when facing top 10 players..
she definitely has to improve her serves, they looked so slow (but it was just
an exhibition anyway).

On a higher note, I can tell you that both players have fantastic and amazing
net skills. They volley so well, it impressed me a lot. There we see why they
won a couple of doubles slams.

Overall, Martina was very relaxed and friendly, she is even more charismatic
than Kournikova (who by the way looks stunning! very beautiful). I think Hingis
is great shape and very motivated on getting back to the tour. She has great
great touch and so much consistency, hardly ever made an unforced error.

At the end of the first set (Hingis 6-1), Kournikova asked for the doctor,
because of blisters in her right hand. While she had treatment Hingis played
some balls with Maria Ester Bueno and it was nice to see how different they
play, and how much the sport has changed. Maria Ester has this continental grip
on the forehand and almost slices the ball, with zero topspin. It is a very
short stroke, compared to Hingis (who hits like everybody else nowadays). Ester
’s backhand is also pure slice. It was fun to watch.

When play resumed, Kournikova lost the first game of 2nd set and gave up. End
of the match. She apologised, but honestly, I am not sure the blister was that
bad.. Anyway.

It was frustrating to have the match ending like this, but it was nice to have
had the opportunity of seeing these great players playing live.

It wasn’t a great match but there were lots of good rallyes, and you can see
so much natural talent in them. I bet they could easily beat any club player
around (including me).

Good luck to Hingis on her return next year, I am now a bigger fan of her, and
best luck to Ana next time, she is also great.
