Tuchel: We want to prove that we deserve to be the favourites
15 Oct 2021
Thomas Tuchel believes the Chelsea players must embrace our status as
favourites and play without fear when we face Brentford in the Premier
League tomorrow.
https://i.imgur.com/h0Pmvrh.jpg
We are back in action this weekend following the latest international
break and will make the short trip across west London to take on
neighbours Brentford in the top flight for the first time, after they
earned promotion by winning last season's play-offs.
The Bees have impressed so far on their debut in the Premier League,
losing just one of their first seven matches in 2021/22, and especially at
home at the Brentford Community Stadium, where they beat Arsenal and drew
with Liverpool.
However, after facing several of the clubs with title ambitions in our own
start to the season, Tuchel knows we now begin a run of games until the
next international break against sides like newly-promoted Brentford where
we will be the favourites, and it is a status he believes we need to
accept, while showing we deserve that tag.
'We have seven games where we are seven times the favourites and we have
seven times to prove that we are the better team because we want to be the
better team,' he said. 'I think we should not be shy to acknowledge that,
we should not make us smaller than we are. We want to prove seven times
now in the next spell that we deserve to be the favourites.
'We need the certain mentality to do so and if favourite means that things
will be easy, we cannot be more wrong. If being the favourite means that
we still expect a tough one tomorrow at Brentford, then this is a good one
to accept and then at the end we have to take all the pressure off our
shoulders and take risks in the game and play with a certain freedom,
because with the fear of losing or with the fear of losing your status you
can win absolutely nothing.
https://i.imgur.com/XCWlEeV.jpg
'That's why if you play for Chelsea, then you play to win and you cannot
be surprised if you are the favourites in a game against Brentford. We
have the attitude right and when we have the attitude right then we
hopefully get the result right. I have coached an underdog team long
enough in Germany to know how capable you can be as a group to close the
gap for 90 minutes. Now we are on the other side and try to make a point
in every single game and it starts with tomorrow.'
Although he wants his players to live up to our status as favourites when
we travel to Brentford, Tuchel is under no illusions about the challenge
that faces us, with our opponents in good form and full of confidence, but
he points to our 3-1 win over Southampton last time out as the example to
follow.
'Brentford will be up for it,' added the German. 'They play with a lot of
enthusiasm and they catch already momentum and all the enthusiasm from
getting promoted after so many years when they tried hard. And finally
Chelsea comes, and not for a cup game, not for a friendly game, Chelsea
arrives for a game in the Premier League and they have so many points on
their side, they have such good results and they are doing a fantastic job
and the atmosphere will be like this.

Tuchel wants more of the same against Brentford following our win over
Southampton
'They will play with a lot of courage, they will play with a lot of
confidence, but we cannot be surprised. We know all this and now it's on
us to adapt and to accept the situation like it is. They will not gift us
a single inch on the field and we have to be ready mentally, physically
and tactically. This is not a match now about knowing the solutions or
out-skilling your opponent, this is also a match where we have to match
the mentality and the attitude.
https://i.imgur.com/dQnoiYo.jpg
'This is exactly what we did against Southampton. We accepted the role
that the other team is maybe the underdog and we were the favourites, but
it did not stop us. We played a very intense game and a very nice game of
football against Southampton and we try to do the same thing tomorrow.'

Tuchel talks Timo, Thiago and referee Taylor
16 Oct 2021
Ahead of today's derby at Brentford, the boss has answered questions on
one striker's run of form, whether there is any chance two defenders could
play, and he was asked for thoughts on the game's referee…
https://i.imgur.com/OCISqal.jpg
Timo Werner returned to Chelsea this week off the back of two impressively
struck goals for Germany, in a 4-0 World Cup qualifier win in North
Macedonia. In his most recent outing for his club side, he netted to
restore the lead in our eventual 3-1 win over Southampton.
Ahead of the 25-year-old's potential next outing today, Thomas Tuchel
considers the question of whether it is imperative the player has the
opportunity to continue to build on this recent success.
'With strikers, you feel sometimes that's a little bit like this,' the
boss acknowledged, 'that you keep them on the pitch and keep the momentum
going.
Thomas Tuchel gives an update on the squad's availability whilst looking
ahead at our next run of matches.
'It is about the actual form, it is about confidence and it's about the
moment. We have so many games that normally we cannot wait for players to
re-find their full potential. Normally we want to have the guys on the
pitch who are actually in shape, with confidence and with a certain
momentum.
'What we have to reflect on is that when Timo was not here he did a very
good match, and he scored against Southampton and that should give him a
lot of confidence.
https://i.imgur.com/N7jLYy3.jpg
Happy Werner after his Saints strike
'But that was two weeks ago so on Friday we showed some pictures from the
Southampton game. It feels a bit weird because this game is so long ago
and the guys played two or three other matches in between but it was our
last match, so you show certain behaviour from the match and you want to
reconnect with that feeling, but it's not that easy.
'So hopefully for Timo it is the same, he needs to restart against
Brentford. And when he gets a chance to start he needs the same kind of
performance as against Southampton, and from there on we go.'
Tuchel has confirmed Reece James is fit enough to start if needed after he
missed England's games with an ankle injury, but having yesterday
indicated Thiago Silva is unlikely to be involved due to a return to
England later than anyone else after the internationals, our head coach
has gone into more detail.
'After he came back on Friday, Thiago needed to go to be isolated. It
would be possible to let him play in theory, and if he didn't play [the
last game for Brazil] we could have maybe thought about it, but the facts
are he played 90 minutes, he has 12-hours travel, he was not part of the
team meeting or tactical training yesterday, so I don't think this is the
moment to take the risk and play him.'
https://i.imgur.com/aOO8jOi.jpg
Thiago Silva played three games for Brazil during the international break,
including his 100th appearance
Today's game is to be refereed by Anthony Taylor and in the build-up media
conference, Tuchel was asked directly whether he is happy with that
appointment of official after some games with the same ref in charge that
have not had a favourable Chelsea outcome.
'I trust in the referees and I trust in Anthony Taylor that he will try to
have the best performance,' Tuchel responded.
'Here in Cobham and in the club we cannot get lost in ideas that there's
something behind it. We have to make ourselves free from this and do what
we need to do to be able to win this match.
https://i.imgur.com/4akmGVb.jpg
Anthony Taylor refereed the Nations League final last weekend
'Do we need a top referee? Yes. Do we need good decisions from VAR, or
maybe no decision from it? Yes. Do we need a little bit of luck? Yes. And
hopefully we can turn things around with Anthony Taylor.'
