Tuchel: Committed Lukaku has apologised

04 Jan 2022

Having met with Romelu Lukaku yesterday, following the striker's omission
from the squad for the Liverpool game, Thomas Tuchel today issued an
update on how the meeting went.

Lukaku was not included at the weekend due to the large amount of noise
created by an interview he gave to Italian media, which in turn was
causing a distraction from the squad's preparation for an important
Premier League fixture.

Speaking at his media conference on Tuesday afternoon ahead of our Carabao
Cup semi-final versus Tottenham, Tuchel had this to say on the matter.

'We are happy we took the time that it needed to look on it and to talk
calmly about it. This is what we did.

'Romelu apologised and is back in the squad for today's training which is
later. For me, the most important thing was to clearly understand and
believe that it was not intentional.

'He did not do this intentionally to create this kind of noise in front of
a big game.

'Secondly, it was the very first time. Before, when he seemed in his
opinion to be ready to play from the start after his injury, and we
thought he needed to readapt to the intensity a little bit more, there was
never the slightest behaviour against the team.

'So it was the very first time that we actually felt in this way. And
these are very important points to stay calm, understanding that it's not
as big as maybe people want it to be. It's also not small, but it's small
enough to stay calm, to accept an apology and to move forward.'

Tuchel was asked what kind of reception he thinks Lukaku will now receive
from the Chelsea fans.

'He is very aware of what happened and what he created and he feels the
responsibility to clean the mess up,' began our head coach's response.

'Maybe we will have a bit of smell still from it. He can handle it.
There's also no other choice, you cannot expect now everybody to be to be
super happy the very next day, but he is still our player and we have a
lot of good reasons to make him play for us and to convince him to fight
hard.

'He is our player, we are happy that he's our player, and we will protect
him and in the end, it's also very important that the stadium supports the
team.

'Even if somebody has a different opinion on it or strongly disagrees, it
is about the team in anything we do and I hope the supporters can take
this also and keep on supporting the team because at the moment we need
the support.'

Tuchel went onto to explain that although it does not make it better or
easier to understand recent events, in Lukaku he sees a committed player
in every way.

'That is why it was so surprising to me because he was on his way and he
scored for us in Aston Villa and in the next game against Brighton,' he
added.

'He was there and he was decisive and we had the feeling there's really a
new start to it after injury and after Covid and that's why it was a big
surprise.

'Before the interview I've never had the slightest doubt that he is
committed because his actions on the pitch and off the pitch and in
private life all go in the same direction.

'He's an emotional guy. He does not hold back with his opinion, so also
credit to that and sometimes he carries his heart on his tongue. We
should not just blame him and just point to the negative side of it. We
have to adapt now to the situation and it created some noise that you
normally absolutely don't want, and this is clearly understood, but there
are zero doubts about his commitment to the team and to the club.'

'Was the intention to create trouble? Was the intention to leave the club?
Was the intention to put pressure on the coach? Absolutely, no, I cannot
see it.

'He did not want to do this intentionally. Of course he should have known
better and that's why we have to clear the air now together, but as we
answer all these questions with a clear no, we need to be mature enough to
accept an apology and have a clear head to prepare the upcoming matches
which are difficult enough.

'He has a long-term contract for a reason and he wants to achieve big
things with his club Chelsea which means a lot to him, and from here we
go. I cannot predict the future but there was no intention behind all this
to change his club or change his ambition.'

Tuchel still believes Lukaku is the 'perfect fit' for Chelsea

05 Jan 2022

Thomas Tuchel has said Romelu Lukaku was always the club's number one
choice when we entered the transfer market last summer, while also
confirming the forward will face disciplinary action for his recent
interview with Sky Sports in Italy.

The club moved to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan in
the summer after deciding to prioritise signing a striker. Tuchel has
admitted the Belgian still has a point to prove and he hopes he can do so
by performing on the pitch.

'First choice is also about what is possible and what's not possible and
what is a good fit,' Tuchel said ahead of the visit of Tottenham. 'It was
the perfect fit, and it still is. Let's say the spotlight got a bit
bright now and we should not talk around it. We all have things to prove.

Lukaku is in contention to feature tonight

'He feels clearly in a position from day one that he has to deliver. I
don't think that you can assume that we spent this amount of money and
bring all this effort after having major doubts or second thoughts, or
having him on the list in, say, place number four.'

The Bavarian also confirmed Lukaku will have to accept a fine for his
recent interview with Italian media that has caused a stir in the past few
days, but is an interview our no.9 has since apologised for.

'There will be some disciplinary action and he will accept it of course,'
Tuchel said. 'What happened, happened. It is not a small thing, but it is
not the biggest thing out there. It does not make a comeback impossible -
absolutely not. This is what we prove now but something happened, and he
will be fined and of course he needs to accept it.'

Tuchel also thanked the efforts of the club for the way they dealt with
the situation and praised the 'open and close relationship' that he has
with other senior Chelsea personnel.

'It is not about my opinion and the club's opinion. It is not about how I
push my opinions through or the club. We had our doubts and we reflect on
the situation. The more the story went on I had a clear opinion, and I was
happy that it was okay for the club to go with it. I had the feeling it
was fine.

'I spoke also to the players because it was not only about my feeling or
ideas. Even in a moment like this where there are easier things to deal
with, it was very nice to see that we have an open and very close
relationship.

Questions on Lukaku dominated yesterday's press conference

'We can find very quick solutions without any political interference,
without pulling in every disturbing factor. We put them aside and isolate
it on the moment and what is best for the moment. From there we went on,
and it was very nice to be a part of it.'

Tuchel: Spurs a good chance for Lukaku to pay us back

05 Jan 2022

Thomas Tuchel has hinted that Romelu Lukaku could return to his starting
line-up for tonight's game against Tottenham Hotspur, believing it might
be the perfect opportunity for the striker to begin repaying the Blues
following his recent comments in the Italian media.

https://i.imgur.com/clOpN76.jpg

The Belgian was left out of the squad for our last match, Sunday's 2-2
draw with Liverpool in the Premier League, as Tuchel looked to minimise
distractions for such a big game. However, our head coach has since
confirmed Lukaku is back in contention to feature against Tottenham in the
first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge tonight after
apologising.

Speaking about Lukaku's media comments themselves, our head coach
explained he feels they were down to the player's frustration that it is
taking time for him to adapt to life at Chelsea following his summer move
from Inter Milan, a situation they are both committed to solving as soon
as possible.

'I feel that he is more impatient than anything else,' said Tuchel. 'He is
impatient, he wants to be involved more, he wants to have big chances
more. It is hard for him to accept that sometimes the grass does not grow
faster when you pull it.

'Like in every transfer you have to accept there is a change of
environment, there is a change of city, there is a change of culture,
change of club, change of team-mates, there is a change of playing style,
there is a change of league. He is not the first player to take some time,
but while he was doing it he was already scoring and we were still in the
situation to adapt to each other.

https://i.imgur.com/wwwVdIb.jpg
Lukaku trains with his team-mates ahead of our Carabao Cup semi-final

'It is of course our job to bring out the best in him, to find the right
position, to find the right assists, to find the right connections and
understand to which movements he has a good connection with and which
playing styles fit to each other.

'Of course, in the end it's on the player. We can just help to fulfil his
potential and this is what we do and sometimes it's faster, sometimes it's
a bit slower, sometimes it's a bit easier. But in the end everyone does
their very best to bring out the full potential and we are still convinced
that there is room for improvement.'

Tonight's opponents Tottenham are managed by Antonio Conte, someone
Chelsea fans know well from his time with the Blues, but who was also in
charge of Inter Milan during arguably the best season of Lukaku's career
so far.

While Tuchel is an admirer of the work Conte did at the San Siro, he
suggests the task of getting the best out of Lukaku is not as simple as
just copying the way Inter played with him in their side.

'We cannot just play like Inter Milan played and hope that will bring the
best out of Romelu. The system Antonio Conte played at Inter did not only
suit Romelu and his second striker Lautaro Martinez, it fit the whole
squad. If you do not have five defenders you cannot play with a back five,
it's as easy as that. If you do not have a winger you cannot play with
wingers.

https://i.imgur.com/VDZR6hr.jpg
Conte has been in charge at Tottenham since November

'The coaches do what they have to do. Antonio Conte played with a 3-4-3 in
the build-up when he was at Chelsea, at Inter he played a 5-3-2, so
obviously he's adapting to his players and from there implementing his
ideas. This is what I do, I adapt to my players, put them in positions
where they are confident, where they can help the team and fulfil their
potential.

'I have nothing but full respect for Antonio Conte, he's such an emotional
and influential coach on the sideline. I really love to watch his teams
play. It will be a pure pleasure to play against him, it is very hard to
beat his teams and it will be like this today.'

With Lukaku back in the squad for a London derby against our rivals
Tottenham, in a cup semi-final, and facing the manager he enjoyed plenty
of success under in Italy, the stage seems set for our No.9 to begin
repaying the Chelsea fans tonight.

The possibility of including Lukaku in the team from the start to do
exactly that certainly appears to be on Tuchel's mind, although he points
out the striker's recent performances since returning from injury and
Covid seem like he has already been trying to make up for his error in
judgement.

Lukaku scored on his last appearance against Brighton

'It would be a nice moment to start the payback,' added Tuchel. 'The
weirdest thing is he did already. I had the feeling 'wow' after Covid,
when we let him play at Aston Villa and he was so decisive for us, and the
next game he scored again. I had a feeling like payback time starts
already, so we had a bit of a delay. Tonight could be a good occasion to
let him start.'
