Tuchel rules four out of Juventus trip

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Mason Mount, Reece James and N'Golo Kante will
not be able to play against Juventus tomorrow, and the game will also come
too soon for Christian Pulisic.

The boss was speaking before the squad depart to Turin and after today's
final training session ahead of a mouthwatering Champions League
encounter. He will be making the trip without four key players, as he
reported at Cobham this afternoon.


'Christian, Reece and Mason are out,' said Tuchel. 'N'Golo unfortunately
tested positive and he needs to quarantine and follow the government
protocols. He was not in training today.'


Tuchel spoke in more detail about the injury James sustained during the
weekend defeat to Manchester City.

James picked up the injury in the first half on Saturday


'It's still very painful. It will come down to pain management in the end
and how much he can accept. Right now we are looking at a minimum of one
more week.'


Tuchel also looked forward to the challenge that awaits us in Italy. Like
us, Juventus are without some important players because of injury, and
although they currently lie in mid-table in their domestic league the boss
knows what a difficult task awaits us.


'They are so experienced and such a big club with so much Champions League
experience,' he said.


'They will enjoy the different competition. They have had a bit of a rough
start according to their results in Serie A, but they were convincing in
the Champions League.

'You never know with players that are missing. The guys who come in want
to show they are reliable.


'We play Juventus at Juventus. It's a no-brainer that demands respect to
the quality and tradition of the club. We need to refocus and regroup and
face a tough challenge with positive energy and determination to bounce
back from our defeat.'

Tuchel rates Chelsea's Champions League chances

Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged the Blues will be a major scalp for anyone
in Europe this season as the Champions League holders, even if he would
still like his side to go under the radar in the competition.

Our ascent to the biggest crown in domestic football last season was as
dramatic as it was unexpected, with many pundits predicting we would not
even beat Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.


Victory against them and Porto placed us in the semi-finals but even then,
Real Madrid were the favourites to progress. Come the final in Portugal
there was no doubting of Chelsea's credentials, but Manchester City
remained most people's picks to lift the trophy.


Balancing expectations now we are the holders is one of Tuchel's tasks
this season, and at his press conference today he explained how he plans
on doing that.


'It's hard to be seen as an underdog when you just won the title,' said
the boss. 'We were not the favourites last season but we got better with
every match, and grew in confidence. We were seen as real contenders very
late in the competition and that can sometimes help.


'Now it is easy to make us the favourites. We have the experience and that
brings a higher value to play against us. It is a higher motivation to
play against us, and we have to accept this.

The triumph we are aiming to repeat


'There is no secret,' he added. 'We like the role of being an outsider or
a challenger to the title, which we still are. I don't think we are the
favourites, but we showed everybody what performances we are capable of.


'It's very important we make ourselves free from these expectations, and
these expectations do not become our expectations. We need to stay
realistic. We demand high standards and the better we do this, the better
for our performance.'
