Tuchel: Focus on Porto, don't get lost in dreams
12 Apr 2021
By the time Chelsea touch back down in London on Thursday, Thomas Tuchel's
side could be semi-finalists in two different competitions, but the boss
has urged his players not to get lost in dreams ahead of a tough battle
against Porto.

The Blues hold a handsome 2-0 advantage from the first leg ahead of the
return back in Seville against the Portuguese champions on Tuesday night,
courtesy of goals from Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell last week.
With the draw to the Istanbul final having already been made, it has led
some to start considering a last-four meeting with either Real Madrid or
Liverpool, while this significant week could also end with a place in the
FA Cup final once again, if we can overcome the obstacle of Manchester
City in Saturday's Wembley semi-final.
Tuchel does not shy away from our trophy-lifting ambitions in his
assessment of the coming days, however with expectations and excitement
building, the German has made it clear that we cannot look beyond the next
assignment.
'Once you are in the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final, you
will not find any team that does not have the goal to arrive in the
semi-final, and from there in the final,' said the boss at his pre-match
press conference in southern Spain this afternoon.
'We are also in the semi-final of the FA Cup so that means we play to
arrive in the final, and if we arrive in the final we will play to win it.
I was very clear, because there is nothing to hide, that Chelsea is a club
that provides a structure, culture and quality to any coach where we can
win games consecutively, and then of course we can titles.

Tuchel and the squad touched down in Seville earlier this afternoon
'I'm here to win games and to win titles. This is what I demand of myself
but there is no tougher match than the next game and there is no other
obstacle to overcome than Porto tomorrow. We should not get lost in dreams
or hopes or speeches. We are here to focus on the reality that we have a
hard battle to fight in the quarter-final.'
Kai Havertz grabbed the headlines with a goal and an assist in a starring
weekend performance against Crystal Palace, after which Tuchel spoke about
how his countryman had very different attributes as a striker to the
aggression shown by predecessors such as Diego Costa.
It was therefore put to Tuchel that, if the 21-year-old was not an
emotional leader for the Blues, then who in the dressing room was?
'Honestly, you don't want to be in a fight with Toni Rudiger or
Azpilicueta or Kovacic,' was the manager's reply.
'They're ready to fight and it's their nature to show it on the pitch and
to protect the interests of our team. I'm pretty sure that our players
feel very comfortable when they look around the dressing room and see who
they can rely on.
https://i.imgur.com/sFAmrV0.jpg
'The best thing tomorrow is that nobody needs to do it alone. We are out
there together - everybody on the pitch will help each other and we will
help from the bench and from the stands.
'We will push hard, hard, hard for the best outcome and that means we have
90 minutes to fight to achieve a big goal.'

Tuchel to make late call on Kante
12 Apr 2021
N'Golo Kante is part of the Chelsea squad that touched down in Spain on
Monday afternoon ahead of the concluding game in our Champions League
quarter-final tie with Porto, but whether the midfielder starts the game
is in question.
https://i.imgur.com/36EoYVf.jpg
That he was involved in the first leg last week, even as a substitute, was
a bonus. Kante had felt hamstring pain playing for France on 24 March but
though he missed Chelsea's defeat by West Brom 10 days later, he has been
available for the subsequent games, against Porto and Crystal Palace, and
made substitute appearances in both.
'I was unbelievably happy when he [Kante] told me he would travel with us
last week to Sevilla, because I didn't expect it,' revealed Thomas Tuchel,
backing speaking in the same city today.
'The plan was that he arrives in the game against Crystal Palace, but he
arrived before that which was amazing. He was confident enough to go on
the pitch and he was strong enough to help us in the last 10 or 15 minutes
with all his quality and intensity.'
That early return to availability did have some consequences for the
30-year-old, and Tuchel went on to explain.
'The downside of this decision and this wonderful situation was that he
lost a bit of sleep after the travel issues back from Sevilla. He lost
some workload in training because he was on the bench and playing only a
few minutes. The next day he suffered from travelling, he could not train
like he normally would train so that was the downside and we decided again
to bring him from the bench against Crystal Palace.
'This is now a decision I will take tomorrow morning when I see him today
in training and then when we reflect on the others for the team in central
midfield.

N'Golo Kante joining celebrations for Ben Chilwell's late goal in the
first leg vs Porto
'Normally it is hard to imagine a game like this without NG, but at the
same time we need to be absolutely careful about him and that we don't
take risks with his health and with his injury situation.
'The question tomorrow is whether we want him to start or whether we want
him to finish the game because there is also the possibility that it will
go to 120 minutes. This is the question and honestly it is not answered
yet, I will do this tomorrow morning.'

Tuchel on pursuing the same approach and why the tie isn't over yet
13 Apr 2021
Thomas Tuchel will tell his Chelsea players to forget about their two-goal
advantage in the tie as the Blues prepare for tonight's Champions League
quarter-final against Porto.
It is back to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville, the venue for
the first leg six days ago when goals from Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell
helped us establish a 2-0 lead and move a step closer to the last four,
where Real Madrid or Liverpool lie in wait.
Chelsea have never been eliminated in a two-legged European knockout tie
after winning the first leg away from home, a record spanning 14 previous
occasions. However, with this being our first-ever 'home' game away from
Stamford Bridge and our supporters only able to cheer on from afar, the
influence of past form like that may prove redundant.
For Tuchel, the focus is on approaching this game like any other, with
victory our objective and the only acceptable result.
'We don't approach games like this, to talk about the result we have and
then change the approach to our game,' he explained of the aggregate
advantage. 'It's important that we are fully focused on us playing the
best game possible again because this increases all the chances to have a
result.
https://i.imgur.com/CJ7HJLP.jpg
The Blues will be hoping to experience that winning feeling in Seville for
the third time this season
'In terms of adapting to the result, it's easier for Porto because they
know very well what they need to do. They need to score three goals if
they want to go through so for them it's absolutely clear.
'For us, if we think like this then we could absolutely lose our heads
because what does it mean? That it's enough to lose 1-0 or it's good to
draw? Why should we enter into this thinking?'
Tuchel wants his players to relish the occasion of a big night in Europe
and the opportunity to reach a Champions League semi-final for only the
second time since we won the trophy in Munich, and the first time in seven
years.
Only skipper Cesar Azpilicueta remains from that class of 2014 so this may
be new ground for many of the current crop to thrive on.
'I hope we embrace the challenge and we feel this is a match that
everybody waits for since he is a little boy,' continued the boss.
'Everybody wants to play decisive matches in the Champions League.
'We have to deliver again and rely on what we are best at. We won't change
our approach to a game because of a result that we had last week. We are
what we are – we have a certain way of playing and we will try to bring
it to the best level.'
A 2-0 win told only part of the story of last week's first leg, with Porto
having twice as many shots as the Blues and forcing Edouard Mendy into a
busy if not overly troublesome evening. Their quality, evidenced by
knocking Juventus out in the Round of 16, means they will always cause
problems for opponents, according to Tuchel.
'You have to accept against Porto that it's a little bit up and down in
some minutes and we experienced that in the first leg,' he added.
'We managed to control the match in some minutes, to create half-chances,
to find some space for acceleration and to have good counter-pressing. But
in some minutes they escaped the pressure and they can be very dangerous
with runs and dribbles and individual quality. They overload the sides and
they are very strong on set-pieces so they give you a lot of questions to
answer.
https://i.imgur.com/sFAmrV0.jpg
'They can shift the momentum but it's a totally normal thing because it
happened in all their matches against Manchester City and Juventus
[earlier in the competition]. They have quality, they are a proud club and
a very emotional team so this is what we have to accept.
'We should not over-expect from ourselves or lose our temper and patience
because of these moments where it's getting difficult. If it happens
again, don't worry because it's normal.'
