Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Brace in Belgium for Ugbo and semi-final
advantage for Baba Rahman
12 Apr 2021
Ike Ugbo's 15th goal of the season was the headline moment of the weekend
for those Chelsea players currently out on loan…

We begin our weekly round-up in Belgium, where 22-year-old striker Ugbo
continued his fine season with Cercle Brugge by bagging a brace in their
3-0 victory against OH Leuven. Both goals were defined by anticipation,
hunger and confident finishing, helping 10-man Cercle record another
crucial three points in their fight for survival in the Jupiler League.

Ugbo remains our top-scoring loanee this term with 15 goals and has played
more minutes than all but two other outfielders from the pool of players
at temporary clubs. The victory takes them four points clear of danger
with just one game of the season to play. Their safety will be confirmed
on Monday if Mouscron fail to win their game in hand.

Elsewhere in Belgium, Matt Miazga played the duration of a surprise win
for Anderlecht against Club Brugge, the league leaders. Barring an
unlikely swing in goal difference, Anderlecht will now be involved in the
four-team play-offs that determine the national champions.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek started again for Fulham but the Cottagers suffered a
fourth successive defeat as their fight for survival stuttered on with a
1-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ruben battles for the ball at Craven Cottage
The midfielder went close to opening the scoring with a downward header
that dropped just wide in the first half, before Adama Traore won it for
the visitors in stoppage time. The result leaves Scott Parker's side six
points adrift having played a game more than Newcastle United, who won at
Burnley.
Ethan Ampadu played at centre-back as Sheffield United were beaten 3-0 by
Arsenal on Sunday evening, while Ross Barkley came off the bench for the
final 24 minutes but could not prevent Aston Villa falling to a late
defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
Kenedy's Granada suffered a 2-0 reverse in the first leg of their Europa
League quarter-final against Manchester United in midweek, with the
Brazilian playing 74 minutes on the right side of attack. It leaves them
with plenty of work to do ahead of the return at Old Trafford this
Thursday. In La Liga, Granada won 2-1 at Valladolid to take them eighth
but Kenedy was not involved.

In Italy, Davide Zappacosta featured throughout at left wing-back as Genoa
were beaten 3-1 in Turin by Juventus, with former Blues striker Alvaro
Morata among the goals. Meanwhile, Tiemoue Bakayoko came on as a late
substitute as Napoli won 2-0 at Sampdoria to strengthen their push for a
top-four finish.
Trevoh Chalobah and Lorient remain just two points clear of the drop zone
in Ligue 1 after losing 4-1 at Lens.
Lewis Baker was in the Trabzonspor midfield for back-to-back draws this
week against Kayserispor and Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig. The team
are eight points clear in one of the qualifying berths for the Europa
Conference League, UEFA's new third-tier competition which begins next
season.
Towards the other end of the table, Danny Drinkwater started Kasimpasa's
1-1 draw at Denizlispor, while Victor Moses and Spartak were beaten in the
Moscow derby by Lokomotiv in the Russian Premier League.
Armando Broja and Juan Castillo went head-to-head in the Eredivisie as
Vitesse and ADO Den Haag played out a goalless draw in Arnhem. Broja
played the first 83 minutes but could not help the Dutchmen find a way
through against the division's bottom side, for whom Castillo played the
final quarter of an hour. Vitesse's next game is the KNVB Cup final
against Ajax next Sunday.

Also in the Netherlands, Marco van Ginkel and PSV Eindhoven were 2-0
winners at Venlo, with the midfielder introduced for the final 17 minutes.
Danilo Pantic helped Cukaricki to a 1-0 win over Proleter in Serbia before
he was withdrawn at half-time in the 0-0 draw against Backa Topola.
Baba Rahman and PAOK established a 1-0 first-leg advantage in the Greek
Cup semi-finals against AEK Athens before dropping two points in the
league with a 1-1 draw at Asteras.
Swansea City's promotion bid got back on track with a 3-0 victory at
Millwall on Friday night, with Marc Guehi starting in a reshaped back four
for the Welshmen, who had lost their previous four matches. The Swans
currently sit fourth in the Championship, 10 points off Watford in the
automatic promotion places with a game in hand.
In League One, Luke McCormick was involved throughout as Joey Barton's
Bristol Rovers picked up a point away at Northampton Town, which leaves
them a point from safety with five games remaining.
Ian Maatsen and Charlton Athletic are the same distance from the play-offs
following a 2-1 win at Sunderland during which the teenage Dutchman found
himself deployed on the right side of a front three.
Meanwhile, Jamie Cumming was between the sticks as Stevenage were beaten
2-1 at Salford City in League Two.
