Chelsea's Eden Hazard vows to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo and lift Ballon d'Or
Simon Johnson - Published: 15 January 2014
Eden Hazard believes he can follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo
and be named the world's best player in the future.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told the Evening Standard yesterday that the
23-year-old has what it takes to become a leading figure in the game if he
stays at Stamford Bridge and competes in the Premier League.
Ronaldo was awarded Fifa's Ballon d'Or award for the second time in his
career in Zurich earlier this week. Significantly, Hazard's performances
for Chelsea were good enough to earn him a place on the 23-man shortlist
but he feels the glittering prize could be his one day.
He said: “I always said it, from when I was little, that it's my dream to
win the Ballon d'Or. Chelsea gave me the chance to be seen on the world
stage, so if I play well I could be seen as a potential Ballon d'Or winner
in the future. Even seeing my name up among the 23, as I'm one of the
youngest, I was really pleased about that.
“I think I have been lucky in my life, in football it has all come very
quickly. I have had so much from a young age. I scored my goals very
early, I got my contract very early and I hope it will continue. I am
making the most of it.”
Hazard agreed a five-year deal when he joined Chelsea from Lille for
£32million in the summer of 2012 and has already made a major impact at
the club.
He helped them win the Europa League last term and has been their most
outstanding performer during the current campaign.
The Belgium international is Chelsea's top scorer with 11 goals and admits
he has wanted to repay the club's faith in him from the moment he arrived
at Stamford Bridge.
He added: “I was so keen to learn new things, that's why I made a good
start because my hunger was there. I really didn't want to disappoint
anyone. I didn't want to make mistakes, I wanted to show I was meant to be
here.
“I try not to think too hard about goals and assists, I just try to
concentrate on playing well. In a match, if I play well the goals and
assists will follow. I try not to focus on that too much because if you
just think about scoring, scoring, scoring, you never will.
“By playing your own game you will succeed by either scoring or providing
an assist.”
