Never previously beyond the opening round of a Women Singles event on the ITTF World Tour, Chinese Taipei Liu Hsing-Yin was the player to cause the biggest upset, as play began in the qualification stage of the Women Singles event at the GAC Group 2015 ITTF World Tour China Open in Chengdu on Wednesday 5th August.

Currently listed at no.175 on the Women World Rankings, she beat the host nation Gu Yuting in a tense seven games encounter (11-9, 1-11, 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 3-11, 11-9) to record arguably the best win of her career.

Currently Gu Yuting has no World ranking as a result of an absence from the international stage; however earlier this year in March, she stood at no.56 and in December 2013 was crowned World Junior Champion in the Moroccan city of Rabat.

Named at no.109 on the Women World Rankings and a member of the Japanese Women outfit at the ZEN-NOH 2015 World Team Championships in Tokyo, Saki Tashiro was beaten by Wang Yi-Ju in a similar manner to the success recorded by Liu Hsing-Ying over Gu Yuting. Wang Yi-Jun won in seven games (11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 2-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6).

DPR Korea
Success for Chinese Taipei, for Hong Kong it was defeat against players from DPR Korea; players like Gu Yuting, who have not been present on the international scene in recent times and thus have no global status.

Leading Names
Meanwhile, for the leading names on duty in the top half of the draw in the first preliminary round of the Women Singles event, those who have enjoyed ITTF World Tour success were untroubled.

Germany Shan Xiaona, the highest rated, was not required to raise a racket in anger, she received a bye to round two; whilst Singapore Yu Mengyu accounted for Korea Jung Yumi in four straight games (11-4, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6).

Currently Yu Mengyu stands at no.25 on the Women World Rankings, Jung Yumi is at no.139.
