Andreas Christensen scored a superb goal on a night of triumph for
Denmark who finish second in their group, despite having lost their first
two Euro 2020 fixtures.

It means the Danes are added to group-winners Belgium in the last-16 and
it has a knock-on effect meaning England and France join them too.


The situation was complex in Group B before kick-off in the final group
games on Monday night, and with the Danes, Finland and Russia all in with
a chance of joining already-qualified Belgium in the knockout stages, but
with uncertainty over whether a third-place finish would be enough, the
situation changed for Denmark several times during the second half of
their match against Russia.


A strong finish to the game however was rewarded with a 4-1 win, with
Christensen smashing in the third of those goals, and with Finland losing
2-0 to Belgium in the other game, second place and guaranteed
qualification was Denmark's.

Once again playing in their home stadium in Copenhagen, the emotion in
light of Christian Eriksen's collapse in the first game was clear, and
having lost their first two matches, a draw was of no use to Denmark but
for most of the first half, it was hard to see where a goal would come
from.


Christensen, a fixture in the Danes' team in this tournament so far, was
secure at the back, as were his colleagues in defence for most of the
game, although they were opened up 20 minutes in by Aleksandr Golovin. His
shot was too close to Kasper Schmeichel to open the scoring for Russia
from what was their best chance before the interval.


As the half progressed, Denmark improved and a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg shot
whistled past the post. That was followed by a good move with Christensen
involved twice but when wing-back Joakim Maehle crossed, no one could make
the most of it.

Instead it was an outstanding strike from outside the box that gave them a
first-half lead, the scorer Sampdoria's Mikkel Damsgaard, the man who came
into the side for the second game in the absence of Eriksen.


Denmark knew goal difference could be important depending on the other
result and they were handed a second goal on 59 minutes by an absolute
gift of a back pass. It was so badly directed it not only found Danish
striker Yussuf Poulsen, it also took the Russian keeper out of the
equation so Poulsen could guide it into an empty net.


At that point, Finland were drawing 0-0 and were still set to finish
second in the group but that appeared to change with Belgium scoring
through Romelu Lukaku, only for a late VAR check to rule it out for
offside.


Suddenly it was getting worse and worse for the Danes as Russian pulled a
goal back from the penalty spot, but then Belgium did go ahead with 15
minutes of both games remaining. Thomas Vermaelen's header went in via the
post and then the Finland keeper.


Leading 2-1, the Danes were now in second place but they needed a cushion
and it was given to them by Christensen. He had a header from a corner
saved but the pressure stayed on and although the Russian goalie made a
double save, the ball came back to the Chelsea man who fired it home with
the sweetest of strikes from outside the area. It is his second
international goal.

Maehle completed the scoring to make it 4-1 from a counter-attack just as
Lukaku was adding Belgium's second goal against Finland. In that game
Michy Batshuayi came on for the final 15 minutes for his first action of
Euro 2020.

Belgium with three wins out of three take top spot in the group and will
play one of the third-finishing sides in the Round of 16 stage.


Denmark face Wales in Amsterdam on Saturday. Third-place Finland must wait
to see if they make it through.


Monday's results also mean England and France have qualified for the
knockout phase ahead of their third games. Four of the best third-placed
teams progress and England and France's four-point totals so far now
guarantees them to be among those at the minimum, regardless of their next
results.

Mateo Kovacic set up the decisive goal that guaranteed Croatia qualified
for the last 16 of Euro 2020 with victory over Scotland, while Reece James
was among the substitutes for England as they secured a potentially
crucial first place finish in Group D.

That means Billy Gilmour's Euro 2020 came to a cruel end, but Kovacic,
James, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell all have their hopes of international
glory intact.


The day's big game came at Hampden Park, where Croatia took on Scotland
with both teams starting the day on one point, meaning the winner would be
in the knockout stages while the loser went out, with a draw ending both
teams' tournaments at the group stage.


Despite Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic making four changes to his side, Mateo
Kovacic continued in midfield, but Scotland were without Gilmour following
his positive Covid-19 test.

Even without Gilmour in their ranks, it was Scotland who did much of the
early running in front of their own fans, forcing several corners and a
couple of saves from Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. They didn't
make it count, though, and just after the 15-minute mark the visitors took
the lead.


It came at the end of a long period of possession, with Kovacic heavily
involved, before Josip Juranovic's cross was headed down by Ivan Perisic
and Nikola Vlasic swept the ball into the back of the net from near the
penalty spot.


They nearly extended their lead soon afterwards when Kovacic did well to
recover a loose ball on the edge of the box and lay off the ball for Luka
Modric, but the Real Madrid midfielder's shot was tipped over the crossbar
by Scottish keeper David Marshall.


With their lead secured, Croatia relaxed and Kovacic, Modric and Marcelo
Brozovic started to dictate the game from midfield. However, before
half-time the scores were level again. Centre-backs Dejan Lovren and
Domagoj Vida both failed to clear convincingly, allowing Callum McGregor
to collect the ball on the edge of the box and fire a powerful shot into
the bottom corner.

With Croatia searching for the goal they needed in the second half,
Kovacic was taking up position much further forward, operating in a number
10 role, but when a loose ball fell to him on the edge of the box he
couldn't make a clean connection with his volley, before the whistle blew
for an offside in the build-up anyway.


The Chelsea man then provided the assist at the end of a fine team move
for Croatia to retake the lead. Following a long spell of possession,
centre-forward Bruno Petkovic toed the ball to Kovacic, who then teed it
up invitingly on the edge of the box for Modric, and the Real Madrid
player curled a brilliant first-time shot past Marshall with the outside
of his boot.


Scotland upped the tempo and looked direct to try and find an equaliser,
but it was Croatia who looked most likely to find the next goal, with
Kovacic having another go from the edge of the box, but hitting his shot
straight at the keeper. The away side did get their safety margin before
too long, though, when Perisic headed in a Modric corner to make the final
score 3-1.

The other game in Group D had been stripped of some of it's Chelsea
involvement as Mount and Chilwell were forced to self-isolate after being
in close contact with Gilmour after England's draw with Scotland. That
left just Reece James on the bench for the Three Lions as they hosted the
Czech Republic at Wembley.


Both teams were already assured of their place in the next round of Euro
2020, but England needed a win to leapfrog their opponents and finish in
first place in the group.


The breakthrough came even earlier in London, as Raheem Sterling, who had
already hit the post with a clever chip, opened the scoring by heading in
Jack Grealish's cross from close range after 12 minutes.


England were having all the possession, with Harry Kane twice being denied
from close range by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik. They still had to be wary of
the threat the Czechs posed on the counter, though, as shown when Tomas
Holes had Jordan Pickford scrambling to palm away one effort and then
Tomas Soucek fired another just wide.

The Three Lions saw out the second half in relatively comfortable style,
with little in the way of goalmouth action, with the exception of Jordan
Henderson having a second for England ruled out by VAR for offside.


All of that meant England finished top of Group D, meaning they will stay
at home at Wembley for their last-16 tie, which will be played next
Tuesday, by when Mount and Chilwell could potentially be back in
contention. They will face the side that finishes second in Group F, which
could still be any of France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary.


Croatia's third goal against Scotland moved them ahead of the Czech
Republic in the table on goal difference, so as runners up they will next
be in action in Copenhagen on Monday, against the side that comes second
out of Sweden, Slovakia, Spain or Poland in Group E.

They needed extra time to do it but Jorginho and his Italy team-mates are
into the quarter-finals at the Euros, two goals from substitutes proving
sufficient to defeat Austria at Wembley Stadium.

The 2-1 win set a new national record of 31 games unbeaten for the
Azzurri, the previous best having stood for 82 years, however playing
outside of Italy for the first time in this tournament they were not as
impressive as during the group stage but nevertheless, Roberto Mancini's
side now play the victors of tomorrow's meeting between Belgium and
Portugal on Friday.


The Italy goals were scored by Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina, both
sharp finishes in the first period of extra time with Austria pulling one
back in the second period from a set-piece. Jorginho played the full 120
minutes while Chelsea team-mate Emerson remained on the bench.

What proved to be the winning goal came just before the interval in extra
time


The game needed the extra half-hour after Austria survived a first half in
which their opponents were the better side, and then looked just as good
themselves in the second half, including having the ball in the net only
for a VAR offside decision to thwart them.


The first half played out how many expected, with the in-form Italians
passing away inside their opponents' half, looking for a way through,
while Austria, breaking new ground by reaching this stage of the Euros,
relying on counter-attacks as their way to goal.


The upshot was no goals before half-time and for all the fluid passing by
the Azzurri, the closest they came was a speculative but well-struck shot
from 30 yards out by Ciro Immobile which hit the top of the post.

Early on, Italy's attacking left-back Leonardo Spinazzola sliced wide and
Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne shot at the keeper from a swift end-to-end move.
That was a comfortable save for Watford's Daniel Bachmann but he made a
much more difficult one with his leg to keep out an effort from Nicolo
Barella.


There was a first-half chance for Austria's star forward Marko Arnautovic,
but the former Stoke and West Ham man fired widely over.


With 50 out of 51 passes completed in the first half, Jorginho had seen
the ball as much as any player on the pitch by the halfway stage but his
team's intensity slackened off in the second half.


Austria had a direct sight at the Italy goal with a free-kick early in the
second half but Bayern Munich's David Alaba could not hit the target.

A lack of precision on the break by both sides prevented shots on goal
before Marcel Sabitzer had a shot for Austria deflected wide. Not long
after, it seemed they had caught their opponents with a counter-attack but
Arnautovic, who had headed the ball in, was to found have been offside by
VAR.


The game drifted on towards the 90 minutes with neither side looking
likely to make the breakthrough. Beradi miscued a bicycle attempt at goal.


Jorginho was fouled close to the Austria penalty area deep into added time
but the free-kick was defended comfortable and so it was extra time for
the first time at Euro 2020. A more difficult second half for the Azzurri
was indicated by Jorginho's pass accuracy for the game dropping to 92 per
cent.


There were five minutes of extra-time played when substitute Chiesa lashed
in with his left foot to finally break the deadlock having made space for
himself with good control.

It took a good save to deny Insigne with a free-kick but before the first
period of extra-time was up, Atalanta's Pessina doubled the lead and there
looked to be no way back for Austria.


However Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced into a good save and Sabitzer
blazed wide of the Italy goal in the second period before Sasa Kalajdzic
with a stooping header from a corner made it 2-1 with five minutes left.


After 11 wins in a row with clean sheets, Italy had conceded a goal but
they did not do so again so go through.

Chelsea team-mates Cesar Azpilicueta and Mateo Kovacic went head-to-head
in Copenhagen, with only one able to advance to the last eight at Euro
2020.

Azpilicueta was a surprise inclusion in Luis Enrique's tournament squad,
having not played for La Roja since November 2018 prior to his start
against Slovakia in their final group game last week.


Having impressed in that 5-0 thumping to secure Spain a spot in the last
16, the Blues skipper retained his place at right-back in a side also
featuring former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata. On the opposite team,
Kovacic made his fifth consecutive start at the tournament in Croatia's
three-man midfield.

A meeting between two group runners-up, questions had been asked of both
these sides in the build-up, particularly of Spain's clinical edge in
front of goal. Yet a five-goal salvo in the Danish capital in a Euros
classic, coming from behind and then winning the tie again in extra-time,
took them to 10 in the past two matches, with Azpilicueta a surprisingly
regular feature of their attacks.


The 31-year-old had five touches inside the opposition box throughout the
game, an early one coming with his head from a right-sided free-kick
curled in dangerously. Yet the delivery was a little behind the defender
and his effort was comfortable for Dominik Livakovic, the Croatia keeper.


Despite a strong start, Spain found themselves 1-0 down after 20 minutes
in the most bizarre of circumstances as Barcelona midfielder Pedri fired a
back pass to Unai Simon and the ball bounced inexplicably over the
goalkeeper's outstretched boot. It was the furthest distance an own goal
has been scored in Euros history and briefly rattled the Spaniards from
their early flow.


Kovacic demonstrated his typically classy touches in midfield, bursting
forward with the ball whenever Croatia were able to get forward, and hit
one rising strike narrowly over as his side gained the initiative after
the breakthrough.

Down the other end, Azpilicueta got on the end of an effort across goal
from fellow full-back Jose Gaya but couldn't direct the ball on target.
Yet within seconds, Spain were level as Pablo Sarabia bundled in Gaya's
saved drive on the rebound.


Kovacic almost got an assist of his own right before half-time with a
defence-splitting pass fizzed into the path of Ante Rebic, but Simon was
quick off his line to snuff out the threat.


Azpilicueta's moment arrived just before the hour mark when he headed in
the first goal of his international career to hand his side the lead.
Advancing once again into the six-yard box, he guided Ferran Torres' cross
in from close range and became Spain's oldest ever goalscorer at a
European Championship in the process.

There was no sign of weariness in the right-back's legs as the game
seemingly moved towards its conclusion and Spanish celebrations
intensified when Torres made it 3-1 with a smart finish underneath the
goalkeeper from the right. Kovacic was withdrawn in the aftermath,
replaced by former Chelsea midfielder Mario Pasalic as part of a double
substitution, and the changes handed Croatia fresh impetus, leading to a
grandstand finish.


They halved the deficit after 85 minutes when Mislav Orsic squirmed the
ball over the line despite the best efforts of Azpilicueta and then forced
extra-time with an equaliser two minutes into stoppage time, Pasalic
arriving right on cue to head in Orsic's brilliant inswinging cross.


Croatia had the momentum but Spain regrouped in the short interval before
the additional half hour and two goals in quick succession after the
restart, from Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal, finally settled a pulsating
contest.


It means 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia exit the tournament and
Azpilicueta's Spain head through to the quarter-finals, where they will
face either France or Switzerland next.

Chelsea's England players did not make it onto the pitch during Tuesday's
last-16 match with Germany but they were the ones celebrating while Toni
Rudiger, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner exit Euro 2020.

As in the group stage, it was Raheem Sterling who was a Three Lions
goalscorer with the opening strike, added to by a header from Harry Kane
for a 2-0 victory.


Sterling netted 15 minutes before the end of what was a largely even and
at times uneventful game, with Kane on target in the 86th minute, after
England had counted their blessings when Thomas Muller missed a gilt-edge
chance for the Germans shortly after the opening goal.

It was a fixture that needed little pre-match hype and playing at a
Wembley whose attendance had been increased to half-full, it was no
surprise there was plenty of tension in the early part of the game. Werner
had one of the best chances in the first half and for England, Kane did
not take an opportunity just before the interval.


Havertz was denied by a good save early in what was mostly a drab second
half, but one lit up near the end by the drama of the England goals,
sandwiching the Muller miss.


Germany named all three of their Chelsea players in their starting line-up
with Werner given his first start of the Euros. He came in for Serge
Gnabry.


For England, Mason Mount was on the bench having missed the last group
game completely due to his period of isolation. Ben Chilwell was not among
the subs but Reece James was. The Three Lions matched Germany up by
playing with a back-three.


It was a defence that was the busier in the early stages as Germany
enjoyed greater possession and pushed further forward. Werner had a
through ball to chase but Jordan Pickford in the England goal won the
race.


It was Havertz who shot from a German free-kick routine from a dangerous
position but the England wall did its job.

With 15 minutes gone, England came alive when a curling strike from
Sterling was saved by a diving Manuel Neuer. The game became more balanced
and Germany began to concede free-kicks inside their half.


England centre-back Harry Maguire clearly knew he should have done better
with a heading chance in open play with 26 minutes on the clock.


Germany had been kept away from the England goal for some time but the
home side were thankful when a dangerous cross evaded everyone in the
middle, shortly before the Chelsea two combined on 32 minutes. Havertz
played the ball forward for Werner who could not beat Pickford with his
shot. It was the most incisive move by either side at that stage.

However in the minute of added time before half-time, England were asking
themselves how they had not taken the lead. A Sterling run was halted on
the edge of the area but the ball broke the way of Kane. It looked to have
opened up for a goal but the England captain's touch lacked control and
the ball was scrambled away.


Within three minutes of the restart, Havertz caught his volley perfectly
from the edge of the area but was thwarted by a flying save.

Then Rudiger, who had been tested at times by England, did well to
dispossess Sterling and send Germany on the attack through the
Havertz-Werner link again, but England defended soundly. Both defences
were on top.

Werner was withdrawn midway through the second half with Gnabry brought on
but it was England who found the goal – Sterling beginning the move and
then finishing it when he got on the end of a Luke Shaw ball in.


Sterling's match almost took a big turn for the worse when his pass back
was snapped up by Havertz to send Muller through one-on-one, but the
Bayern man fluffed his lines big time when he dragged his shot wide.


England's two-goal cushion was established when Kane stooped to head in a
cross from substitute Jack Grealish.

It had looked at one stage in the second half that Reece James would be
introduced by Gareth Southgate when Kieran Trippier appeared to have
tweaked his hamstring, but the right wing-back made it through to the end.


England will now play Ukraine who beat Sweden 2-1 after extra time in
Tuesday's later game. That quarter-final is on Saturday in Rome.
