INTERNATIONALS: SOLANKE IN ENGLAND EURO ACTION
Posted on: Fri 09 May 2014
Chelsea youth team striker Dominic Solanke started for England Under-17s
as they won their opening match at the European Under-17 Championship
against hosts Malta this evening [Friday].
Solanke, who scored the crucial equaliser and then the winner in Monday's
dramatic FA Youth Cup final victory over Fulham, began in the number 10
role in a 3-0 win, where he has frequently featured for the youth team
this season, before being withdrawn 10 minutes into the second period.
England dominated in a one-sided contest on the first day of the annual
tournament. Solanke almost got on the scoresheet after good movement
inside the six-yard box early on, though good defending at the front post
saw the low cross towards him diverted behind for a corner.
The goals for the young Three Lions came courtesy of two players who have
also scored against our Under-18 side during this year's Youth Cup
campaign. Adam Armstrong netted in our 3-2 win over Newcastle at St James'
Park in the sixth round and he grabbed the second goal of the evening
against Malta with a close-range finish.
Meanwhile Patrick Roberts, the Fulham forward who caused us problems both
home and away in the final against the Cottagers, was the star of the show
as he scored the other two as well as assisting for Armstrong.
Izzy Brown is the other Chelsea representative at the tournament, though
he was suspended for the opening match. John Peacock's side are next in
action on Monday when they take on Turkey.
