Mateo Kovacic and Ethan Ampadu were both in UEFA Nations League action on
Thursday evening, while two Chelsea youngsters were involved in England
Under-21's' win over Italy.

Kovacic and Croatia knew that if they beat Denmark on home soil they would
overtake the Danes and top Group A1 heading into the final matchday on
Sunday, where they face Austria.


Croatia's head coach Zlatko Dalic has played the Chelsea star in all four
of their Nations League contests prior to tonight, and he selected him
once again in the engine room in Zagreb.


Kovacic started in a midfield three alongside Luka Modric and Marcelo
Brozovic, and Croatia took the lead just minutes after the second half
whistle, with Stuttgart's Borna Sosa netting for the hosts.

Manchester United's Christian Eriksen then levelled the score line with an
exquisite hit from 25-yards. Mateo Kovacic was substituted off moments
later, before Lovro Majer restored Croatia's lead with another fantastic
goal – this time a left-footed effort from outside the area. Kovacic
attempted two shots and 63 passes in Zagreb.


Chelsea and Wales defender Ethan Ampadu, currently on loan at Serie A side
Spezia, faced off with Belgium in Group A4, with the Welsh sat bottom of
the pile before kick-off with just one point from a possible 12.

Wales were without key midfield figures Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen and
that meant Chelsea's Ampadu started in central midfield, with three former
Blues spearheading the Belgium attack, with Kevin De Bruyne, Michy
Batshuayi and Eden Hazard leading the line.


And it was De Bruyne who put the hosts ahead, brilliantly firing a
first-time left-footed shot into the bottom corner, despite a hand from
Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.


It was Batshuayi who passed to De Bruyne for the opener and the latter
then repaid the favour and set up the striker to double Belgium's lead
before half-time.


Wales then pulled one back through a Keiffer Moore header, but it was not
enough as Wales suffered a fourth defeat in their first five Nations
League contests.


Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea at Inter Milan, has missed the last
four Serie A matches due to a muscle injury and was therefore not called
up to the Belgium squad.


England's Under-21s are replicating the fixtures of the men's team, first
playing Italy before hosting Germany at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane on
Tuesday. The Young Lions have already qualified for the 2023 Under-21
Euros in Romania and Georgia next summer after topping their group.


Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill started for Lee Carsley's men against
Italy. The former, who made his Chelsea debut on the opening day of the
season, won a penalty for the away side just three minutes in, after being
fouled by Edoardo Bove.

A quickfire double from Sheffield United's Rhian Brewster was enough to
see the Young Lions prevail in Pescara.


England could have had more than the two goals, with defender Levi Colwill
hitting thepost with a header from a corner in first-half injury time,
before Chelsea midfielder Gallagher was denied by a last-ditch block from
Caleb Okoli later on. Both of Chelsea's connections were substituted
around the 70th minute.

Chelsea's Sam McClelland, who is plying his trade at high-flying League
Two Barrow this season, was in Northern Ireland Under-21 action as they
hosted Scotland in a friendly.


The hosts were 0-2 behind at half-time and then went three down after the
break, before pulling a consolation goal back to see the match end 3-1 to
Scotland. They will travel to Scotland on Sunday for a repeat fixture.

The UEFA Nations League brought Italy and England together in a repeat of
the Euro 2020 final on Friday night, and again it was Jorginho and his
compatriots who were celebrating at the end.

The Chelsea midfielder played all but the final few minutes of a 1-0 win
for the Italians which keeps them in contention to make the Nations League
finals. England are relegated to level B of the competition.


Reece James and Raheem Sterling were the two Chelsea starters for the
Three Lions in the San Siro. Mason Mount was an unused substitute. Ben
Chilwell, part of the overall squad, was not included in the matchday
squad for this game.


It was shaky start from England but they grew into what became an even if
uneventful first half. James in space had a crossing chance midway through
it but could not reach his target Harry Kane. Later the Chelsea wing-back
had a shot into a crowded area which deflected wide.

Kane found space for a long-range attempt near the interval but it was
optimistic and off target.


Sterling had been very closely policed by the Italian players, often with
his back to goal, but early in the second half he was able to embark on a
good run which ended in an England free-kick and an Italy booking. James
was allowed to go for goal from a good position but did make it pay.

Italy opened England up soon after that but the ball went wide and the
offside flag went up. Instead their goal came from the edge of the penalty
area midway through the second half. Giacomo Raspadori, on loan at Napoli
from Sassuolo, brought a long ball down well and finished even better.


Kane was denied an equaliser by a double save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
James, who was on a lot of the set-pieces, tried to catch the Italian
keeper out with a free-kick from out wide but it was punched away.


The Azzurri came closer to a goal with a shot saved by Nick Pope and then
a follow-up cross that hit the post. In added time, a James cross was
headed over by Jude Bellingham.

England now have one more game before the World Cup in Qatar, against
Germany on Monday. Italy, who did not qualify for this winter's big
tournament, now play Hungary the same day.


Germany will arrive at Wembley off the back of a 1-0 defeat as well. They
went down to Hungary in Leipzig. The goal came early on from Adam Szalai
to inflict a first defeat as Germany coach on Hansi Flick.


Kai Havertz remained on the bench until the 69th-minute when he was
brought on for his former Chelsea colleague Timo Werner. After a good
first half by the Hungarians, Havertz was busy in a stronger showing by
the Germans later in the game but their opponents could have doubled their
advantage with a late one-on-one chance that was saved. While Germany's
place in the top tier of the Nations League is safe despite this result,
it is Hungary's game against Italy that will yield the finalists from
their group.


Away for the UEFA competition, Thiago Silva took up his customary place in
the Brazil starting line-up, against Ghana in a game held in France, and
it did not take long for the South Americans to take the lead.


Marquinhos scored from a corner, and the lead that was doubled before
half-an-hour had been played by Richarlison, who then added his second and
Brazil's third before half-time with a header, Neymar providing the ball
for both those goals.

Fresh from celebrating his 38th-birthday yesterday, Thiago Silva was
rested from any second-half action and no more goals were added. In fact
Ghana came close to spoiling the clean sheet when Andre Ayew headed
against the bar. They also gave a debut in the second half to former
Chelsea player Tariq Lamptey.


Hakim Ziyech, following his return from retirement from international
football, was handed a start by Morocco as they played Chile in a friendly
in Spain. He played 82 minutes and by the time he was replaced, his side
had scored the game's two goals, the first from the penalty spot after a
handball.

At Under-21 level, Wesley Fofana started for France in a friendly in
Germany and his side began strongly. The German side came back into it but
France scored early in the second half from a counter-attack, Rennes
striker Amine Gouiri making the breakthrough which led to a deserved 1-0
win.


Ian Maatsen came on for the final 15 minutes for Netherlands Under-21s who
also won. Their game was away to neighbours Belgium with both the Dutch
goals in a 2-1 win coming in the first half, scored by Ajax's Brian
Brobbey.


Cesare Casadei opened the scoring for Italy's U20 team in what was an
action-packed game against Portugal on Friday afternoon.


The young Italian midfielder has taken his goalscoring form at club level
into the international scene as it took less than 20 minutes for him to
net in a 2-1 win.


Leo Castledine was involved in England U18s' 2-1 win over Faroe Islands.
Somto Boniface, Kiano Dyer and Michael Golding all started in the England
U17s 3-0 victory over Czech Republic.

Jorginho was part of the Italy side which booked their place in next
summer's UEFA Nations League finals, while Mason Mount and Kai Havertz
provided three of the six goals as England hosted Germany in the other
match in Group A3.

The Italians went into their final game in the Nations League group stage
eager to put the disappointment of their failure to qualify for the 2022
World Cup behind them by reaching the last four in this competition, but
knew only a victory away at surprise leaders Hungary would be enough.


Jorginho started the match at the centre of a three-man midfield, in the
same role he occupied for their Euro 2020 triumph, and it was very much
mission accomplished for the Chelsea man as he helped Italy secure
qualification and the country's first win in Budapest since their
legendary double World Cup-winning side in 1933.

The Azzurri took the lead in the first half when Giacomo Raspadori
capitalised on a mix-up in the Hungary defence and then Federico Dimarco
smashed in a cross to make it 2-0 in the second half, although the
visitors also had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for several
vital saves in an entertaining and surprisingly open match which featured
plenty of chances at both ends.


Jorginho was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining and the victory largely
secured, meaning he can now look forward to joining Mateo Kovacic's
Croatia, the Netherlands and one other nation in next summer's final four.

A low-key and goalless first half gave little clue as to what would arrive
later in the game, despite Sterling being denied several times by Germany
goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen before Ilkay Gundogan gave Germany the lead
from the penalty spot. Havertz then seemingly took the tie beyond England
when he scored a stunning second for the visitors, curling a left-footed
strike around the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

The home side struck back, though, with two goals in three minutes
levelling the scores, the first coming through the two wing-backs
combining, when Luke Shaw turned in James' cross. The second came from
Mason Mount just minutes after coming off the bench, as he fired Bukayo
Saka's pass into the net with an unstoppable first-time effort after the
Arsenal man had been found by James.

Incredibly, England then took the lead themselves after a VAR review
awarded the Three Lions a penalty, which was tucked away by Harry Kane
with seven minutes left. There was one more twist to come, though, as
Havertz reacted quickest when England goalkeeper Nick Pope couldn't hold
Serge Gnabry's shot, slotting in to equalise in the 87th minute and make
the final score 3-3, after a frantic finish at Wembley.

Earlier in the day, England Under-18s had faced Belgium in their last
match of the Costa Calida Supercup in Spain, coming from behind to win 2-1
and end the three-game tournament with a 100 per cent record.


Chelsea midfielder Leo Castledine had been introduced from the bench
shortly after England's 71st minute equaliser, before the Young Lions
found a late winner and fellow Blue Samuel Rak-Sakyi came on to help
preserve that lead during the closing stages.

Starting in the Nations League, Denis Zakaria was introduced for the final
11 minutes and successfully helped Switzerland hold on to a 2-1 lead
against the Czech Republic, thus avoiding relegation from Group A2. The
Swiss scored twice in a minute in the first half before the Czechs hit
back. Tomas Soucek then passed up a chance to equalise from the penalty
spot.


In the same group, Spain got the win they needed to overtake Portugal and
book their place in the final four of the tournament alongside Italy,
Croatia and the Netherlands. Cesar Azpilicueta watched from the bench as
his former Chelsea team-mate Alvaro Morata grabbed an 88th-minute winner
in Braga, prodding in from close range.

Also in the Nations League tonight, Armando Broja got 20 minutes as
Albania conceded late on to draw 1-1 with Iceland, who had been reduced to
10 men early on in Tirana. Albania edged out shortly before half-time but
couldn't press home their advantage and conceded in the seventh minute of
stoppage time.


For our non-European players in action tonight, friendly fixtures were the
order of the day.


Brazil enjoyed another big win as their impressive run of form continued,
this time thrashing 10-man Tunisia 5-1 in Paris.


At his former home ground, Thiago Silva earned his 109th cap and played
the full 90 minutes. Raphinha, Richarlison and Neymar all found the net
for the Selecao, who were briefly pegged back to 1-1 but still lead by
three at the interval, shortly before which the Tunisians had a player
sent off for a bad tackle on Neymar.

Having now won 11 and drawn three of their past 14 games, it seems like
the five-time winners will take some stopping in Qatar.


Christian Pulisic was fit enough to start and captain the US as they drew
0-0 with Saudi Arabia. On a tough pitch in Murcia, Spain, the game lacked
quality with neither keeper having much to do. Pulisic was withdrawn 15
minutes from time, with Gregg Berhalter's side now turning their attention
to the World Cup and, first up, a meeting with Wales.

Kalidou Koulibaly played 90 minutes as Senegal drew 1-1 with Iran in
Austria. The two goals were traded either side of the hour mark, the Lions
of Teranga having taken the lead. Edouard Mendy remained absent through
injury.


Senegal's next scheduled fixture is their World Cup opener against the
Netherlands on 21 November. The hosts and Ecuador complete Group A.

Conor Gallagher netted for England's Under-21s as they defeated European
Championship holders Germany 3-1 at Brammall Lane.


Gallagher displayed his predatory instincts inside the box with a
close-range finish from Anthony Gordon's low delivery after good work from
Jacob Ramsey.


The Young Lions had gone behind, former England Under-17 and Under-19
midfielder Felix Nmecha heading the visitors in front, but Folarin Balogun
quickly equalised, and 90 seconds after the restart Gallagher completed
the turnaround. England defended well and then struck on the counter in
stoppage time through Cole Palmer, sealing another impressive victory
following the 2-0 success in Italy last week.


Gallagher and another Blue, Levi Colwill, were replaced on 70 minutes.
Colwill's performance at the back was good enough to earn him the Player
of the Match award.

Elsewhere at Under-21 level, Wesley Fofana played an hour of France's 2-2
draw with Belgium in Valenciennes. The French, one of the favourites for
next summer's European Championships, had to come from behind twice
against their neighbours. Fofana went off just after his nation trailed
for a second time.


Ian Maatsen came on in the 54th minute of the Netherlands Under-21s'
goalless draw with Romania in Cluj. Netherlands dominated possession and
the shot count but couldn't find a breakthrough.


Carney Chukwuemeka played the last half-hour as England Under-20s defeated
Australia 3-0, rounding off their trip to Spain with a third win from
three games.


At that age group Italy won by the same scoreline against Switzerland with
Cesare Casadei captaining.


England Under-19s finished their European Championships qualification
campaign with a third win out of three, Lewis Hall featuring throughout
their 4-2 win over hosts Denmark.


Jimi Tauriainen started for Finland Under-19s and was subbed off after 74
minutes. Portugal won 2-1.


England Under-17s were well beaten by Poland in a friendly, 5-0 the final
scoreline. Michael Golding, Josh Acheampong, Tyrique George, Somto
Boniface and Ted Curd all played.
