The best time for Island Hopping in the Andaman Sea is the "dry" monsoon
season from November to April with predominantly light to moderate north
eastern winds. November is the coolest month of the year with day
temperatures of 28 - 30ºC, the nightly temperature is regularly 5 - 7
degrees lower.
The temperatures are slowly raising from November until May, in January, you
can expect temperatures of 30 - 33ºC, in April the temperatures will climb
up to 35 - 37ºC and occasionally downpours might occur.
The "wet" monsoon season lasts from May through to October with temperatures
slowly declining to the lowest level in November. During this period, the south western winds are
sometimes quite strong and produce a fairly large swell on the open sea,
swimming is not recommended during this period. Most of the smaller resorts
on the islands will close down due to a lack of customers. Transportation
will be available only to some of the bigger islands.
Diving during the Nortwest monsoon will be available on Phuket, Phi Phi and
Krabi, while many diving schools at other destinations will close down due to
a lack of customers. If you plan a sailing charter In this part of the year,
be prepared for squalls which, when cruising in open water, require a skilled
crew to cope with them. Large inshore areas, however, allow easy, sheltered
sailing. Weather conditions in the “wet” monsoon are generally surprisingly
good. Although you have to expect some rain, this usally comes in short
squalls. Prolonged periods of rain are rare.
