Holders start with a win at U-19 Euros
18 Jul 2018
England's youngsters kicked off their defence of the Under-19 European
Championship title with an entertaining win over Turkey, with two Chelsea
Academy representatives in the starting team.
Paul Simpson had named a much-changed squad at the start of the week, with
FA Technical Director Dan Ashworth urging UEFA to consider rescheduling
the annual tournament so all players could participate without disrupting
their pre-season at club level. Chelsea were still the best-represented
club in the squad with five teenagers travelling to Finland – Trevoh
Chalobah, Jamie Cumming, Conor Gallagher, Tariq Lamptey and Dujon Sterling.
Chalobah and Sterling have both recently completed loan moves to Ipswich
Town and Coventry City respectively and the pair started for the young
Lions in their group opener as the holders fell behind within two minutes.
However, a spirited comeback sealed all three points as Tottenham's Japhet
Tanganga levelled from close range after a free-kick was whipped in from
the left before Ben Brereton made it 2-1 at the end of the first half.
The standout goal went England's way early in the second half as
Sunderland's Elliot Embleton curled in a brilliant strike to put the
contest beyond Turkey, although the Turks did pull a further goal back
after 57 minutes to ensure a competitive finale. Cumming, Gallagher and
Lamptey were unused substitutes.
A victory for Ukraine over France in the other Group B fixture means it
will be a clash between the top two next for Simpson's side on Friday 20
July, before they conclude the group against France next Monday 23 July.
The top two from each group advance to the semi-finals and secure one of
the European qualification spots for next year's FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

England Under-19: England held to frustrating Ukraine draw
20 July 2018
Defending champions England will have to wait to secure a place in the
semi-finals of the European Under-19 Championship in Finland after a
frustrating 1-1 draw with Ukraine.
England dominated, taking the lead when Marcus Tavernier buried a low
shot. Vladyslav Supriaha levelled against the run of play, before George
Hirst hit the post from 20 yards and Ben Brereton had a goal ruled out for
offside.
Both sides could progress to the last four with one group game remaining.
England won the tournament last year but are without a number of star
players because it clashes with clubs' pre-season tours.
The top two sides in each group progress to the semi-finals - and England
would also qualify for next year's Under-20 World Cup with a place in the
last four.
England's Under-20s and Under-17s won their respective World Cups during a
hugely successful year for England's youth teams last year. The Under-21s
also made it to the semi-finals of the European Championships.
England - who beat Turkey 3-2 in their opener - play their final group
game on Monday against France, who beat Turkey 5-0 on Friday.
Ukraine: Kucheruk; Bondar, Popov, Mykolenko; Korniienko, Khakhlov,
Dryshliuk, Konoplia; Buletsa, Supriaha, Tsitaishvili
England: Balcombe; Sterling, Tanganga, Watts, Chalobah, Lewis; Embleton,

Holders exit on difficult day
23 Jul 2018
England's defence of their European Under-19 Championship crown ended in
disappointment on a difficult day for the young Lions in Finland.
Paul Simpson's side went into the final group encounter against France
needing just a point to advance to the semi-finals after beating Turkey
and drawing with Ukraine over the preceding seven days at the tournament.
The team had stormed through qualification with five wins from six, having
won all but one of their 11 competitive games in 2016/17 on the way to
lifting the trophy last July in Georgia.
However, France knew they needed three points in order to progress
themselves and Les Bleus produced a blistering performance to pip England
to second place in Group B. Goals from AS Monaco's Nabil Alioui and Lyon's
Myziane Maolida gave them a 2-0 half-time advantage, though it might have
been greater but for the efforts of goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe in the
England goal.
Simpson's holders restarted with more purpose as they searched for a route
back into the contest but their defensive frailties were exposed
frequently in the second period. Alioui made it 3-0 before Amine Gouiri
came off the bench to net a six-minute brace and help the French to a
second successive 5-0 win at the tournament.
Trevoh Chalobah captained the England team, joined in the starting 11 by
club team-mates Dujon Sterling and Conor Gallagher, while goalkeeper Jamie
Cumming and Tariq Lamptey remained unused substitutes.
The squad have a final opportunity for redemption later this week when
they play a third-place play-off against Norway. The winners will take the
final European berth for next year's 2019 FIFA Under-20 World.

Three feature in England U-19 defeat
26 Jul 2018
England's disappointing tournament at the European Under-19 Championship
ended in defeat as the young Lions missed out on the final qualification
berth for next year's Under-20 World Cup.
After the defence of their continental crown ended at the group stage,
following a heavy loss to France, Paul Simpson's side had one final chance
for redemption in a play-off against Norway.
Tariq Lamptey made his debut at the Under-19 age group, starting as an
advanced winger, while Dujon Sterling and captain Trevoh Chalobah lined up
in defence in Finland. However, the trio could not prevent England from
conceding three goals in the final 15 minutes. Jamie Cumming and Conor
Gallagher were unused substitutes.
The defeat means the side will not have the chance to defend the trophy
they won so memorably in South Korea last June. Italy, France, Portugal
and Ukraine are the four sides in the semi-finals.
