Venus Donates EleVen Shoes
BANGALORE, India - Winning her fifth Wimbledon crown isn't all Venus Williams
has been up to lately. The 28-year-old American - who, two weeks ago,
defended her title at the All-England Club without dropping a single set -
has been continuing her work as the first Promoter of Gender Equality under
the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's partnership with UNESCO. Her latest efforts
involve donating sneakers from her EleVen line to young girls she met in
Bangalore, India in March.
Williams, who reached the semifinals at the Bangalore Open, met many young
girls at the UNESCO announcement at the Tier II event, and just last month
they all received shoes from the clothing and apparel line she launched last
summer. The school that the girls are from - the Hutting Government School -
benefits from the Tour's partnership with UNESCO, which aims to promote
leadership and gender equality in all spheres of society. Many of the
children came to the UNESCO announcement in Bangalore barefoot, which touched
Williams and prompted her to make the donation. She even asked the girls on
the spot what their shoe sizes were, and, in conjunction with Steve & Barry,
sent them the shoes.
Williams was named the first Promoter of Gender Equality in November of 2006
and has since been joined by France's Tatiana Golovin and China's Zheng Jie.
