US OPEN 07- Rhythm Bandits
28/08/2007:
On a beautiful sunny New York day Justine defeated young German qualifier
Julia Goerges 6-0 6-3 in 62 minutes. There was nothing particulary historic
about this match for a chapter in Justine's book of tennis career lore, but
it was memorable for the fans who were in Arthur Ashe for opening day. The
dashing Belgian will next play Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova on Wednesday in
the 2nd round.
"It's a good feeling. I had a chance to practice yesterday with Jankovic on
the stadium. It's different. It's big. It's huge. You need a little bit of
time to get used to it. But it's a good feeling. It's a court that brings me
a lot of good memories good and bad memories. But, not so different this
Grand Slam from the others. I'm feeling good." -Justine on playing at Arthur
Ashe's Room
A very poised Justine entered Arthur Ashe stadium and played a young German
qualifier named Julia Goerges (Wta #145) who is playing her first major.
Goerges best and only result this year in a main draw WTA event was Doha
(Tier II) in February where she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova d 7-5
6-1. The German made the incorrect assumption of urban hardcourt legend - all
you need to beat Justine is hit very hard at her. Goerges swatted, and
smacked, but to no avail. Half the shots were in and the other half were out.
The German's serves were void of rhythm, and contageous enough to be passed
onto Justine, much to the Belgian's chagrin.
"I don't have a lot of things to say about that match because there wasn't a
lot of rhythm. She was serving pretty hard, pretty good, but did a lot of
mistakes. I just did a good job. Generally it's been positive. I'm glad to
win that way. Nothing special today." - Justine
With the cool, and casualness of a musician in the recording studio, Justine
looked up and made a Hawk-eye challenge call to deny Goerges of a game point
to get on the scoreboard. There was only one artist in this match, and room.
Justine won the first set 6-0 in 24 minutes.
Goerges held serve in the first game, and longest in the second set making it
fairly competative. There were rallies in this set to 3-3, but Justine's
level didn't drop or go up another gear. The process of refining technique
and fluency from Justine was the focal point for the rest of the set.
Final Score 6-0 6-3 in 62 minutes
*Web Team Editor's note. Justine played her next opponent Pironkova once
before. They met at Indian Wells 2006 in the second round. JH won 6-2 6-2.
