PL2 Report: Leicester City 1 Chelsea 1
23 Oct 2021
Our development squad played out a 1-1 draw with Leicester CIty away from
home on Saturday, with Bryan Fiabema scoring his fifth goal of the season
in the PL2. The result keeps us in ninth place for now.

In a contest that took until the second half to really get going, Andy
Myers will be disappointed the team failed to convert some of the big
chances created late on to give them a win.
== Tentative half ==
The first half was one to forget, as the action was focused around the
centre of the pitch. Both sides enjoyed periods of possesion with
Leicester shading the stats as a whole in that half.
Both sides had two corners and two shots apiece but for most of the half,
neither side threatened with keepers Lucas Bergstrom in our net and Jakub
Stolarczyk in the Leicester goal being spectators.
As the half drew to a close, there was one well-worked move which stole
the show in a a quiet half. A corner which was taken short and some nice
interchange between Xavier Simons and Lewis Baker led to Baker firing an
effort from 20 yards out which cannoned off the top of the bar.

== Increased tempo ==
The second half began with our boys controlling the game. Baker was
orchestrating a number of moves for our side. From a free-kick that he
won, George McEachran delivered a teasing ball which found George Nunn on
the back post. But for the combination of a Leicester defender and their
keeper in goal, Nunn would have likely opened the scoring.
Leicester from a free-kick of their own went close to getting the opener
as Ben Nelson sliced his effort wide of Bergstrom's goal.
With no real rhythym to the game and both sides having possession,
Leicester created their first clear sight of goal of the second half.
Substitue Jake Wakeling of Leicester was played in nicely and he fired a
left-footed shot just wide.
== Back and forth ==
Just after the hour mark, with the Foxes beginning to shade the contest, a
free-kick was given away as Baker was fouled. He delivered a dangerous
free-kick which landed at the feet of Xavier Mbuyamba, whose shot was
parried by the keeper but not to safety. Fiabema continued his fine form
in all competitions by dispatching clinically and giving us the lead. He
is now our top goalscorer in the PL2 with five goals.

Leicester responded positively however, and with all the possession that
they had, our boys failed to clear their lines on multiple occasions. A
deflected effort found its way to the back post, where number eight
Marcal-Madivadua was on hand to volley into the roof of the net.
The Foxes increased the pressure and our boys had their backs against the
wall. Leicester captain Vontae Daley-Campbell went on a surging run which
resulted in a strong left-footed shot which Bergstrom saved excellently.
From a well-delivered corner, Leicester almost headed in as Lewis Brunt
skewed his header wide.
== Momentum swung ==
Our boys fought back despite the pressure. A floated cross was met by
Harvey Vale who headed narrowly wide. Immediately after that Dion Rankine
came alive and after beating his man his cut-back found Baker, whose
drilled shot was deflected onto the post. Rankine again threatened as he
used his pace to get past his man and deliver a chipped cross to the back
post. Vale met the cross but his header lacked the power necessary to beat
the keeper, so was pushed away comfortably by the Leicester City keeper.
We were now looking like the side in control as we fashioned yet another
chance. Jayden Wareham who came on for Fiabema looked lively. His flick-on
found McEachran who drove towards goal. He played a reverse pass to
Wareham and he proceeded to smash goalwards, to which the keeper made a
fine stop.

Another chance fell the way of our boys as Vale won a free-kick on the
edge of the box. Baker fired goalwards and it was pushed back into danger
by the keeper. A brilliant sliding tackle stopped Alfie Gilchrist from
tapping home.
With the game hanging in the balance it was our young Blues who looked
most likely to grab the winner but that was to no avail.
Our boys will next be in action away at Cheltenham Town in the Papa John's
Trophy on Tuesday 26th October 2021. In the PL2, we welcome Everton to
Kingsmeadow on Saturday 30th October 2021. Tickets are available to buy
for that one.
