PL2 report: Chelsea 3 Man City 4
Sat 18 Feb 2017
Our development squad were involved in an entertaining contest this
afternoon (Saturday), though they were ultimately beaten at Aldershot by
Manchester City.
The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead as Brahim Diaz bagged an early brace
before the Blues fought back to go in level at the break with goals from
Charly Musonda and Josimar Quintero. An even second period hinged on a
harsh decision from the referee to award City a penalty for handball
against Chalobah and Diaz stepped up to seal his hat-trick before
substitute Isaac Buckley completed the scoring.
Viveash made three changes from the side that beat Reading 2-0 in our last
outing as Ola Aina, Kyle Scott and Josimar Quintero returned to the team.
The latter was handed the number 10 shirt and assumed the responsibility
of supporting striker Ike Ugbo, with Charly Musonda and Charlie Wakefield
assisting from out wide.
Bradley Collins started between the sticks on his 20th birthday and was
protected by a back four of Todd Kane, Trevoh Chalobah, Joseph Colley and
Ola Aina. Kyle Scott partnered Josimar Quintero in central midfield, while
City named the PL2 top scorer Paolo Fernandes in their starting 11.
However, it was the hosts who carved out the first opportunity of the
afternoon within the opening few minutes, Fernandes dispossessed in a
dangerous area and City keeper Daniel Grimshaw saving well from Ugbo.
The early warning sign was heeded by City and they quickly established a
two-goal lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Skipper Rodney Kongolo
started the move inside his own half, releasing Diaz to advance towards
goal and finish across Collins and into the far corner.
The Spaniard got his second a couple of minutes later as Aaron Nemane
turned provider from the right and his cross was converted from close
range past a helpless Collins. City had their tails up in the Aldershot
sunshine and Kane did well to prevent a third goal, covering from
right-back to deny Jadon Sancho in behind.
Yet it didn't take long for Viveash's side to reduce the deficit as a
delivery from Wakefield down the right flank caused problems for City's
defence and Demeaco Duhaney's clearance rebounded back off Musonda and
past Grimshaw into the back of the net.
With a foothold back in the game established, the contest settled for the
first time. Tosin Adarabioyo did well to clear from under his own bar,
while the lively Diaz fired narrowly over down the other end.
Musonda spurned a good opportunity to test Grimshaw with a well-positioned
central free-kick, the Belgian firing high over the crossbar as the
interval approached. Ugbo also struck off-target having been teed up
promisingly by Aina's advance from left-back, before the Blues equalised
four minutes before the break.
Musonda rolled a short corner from the left out to Quintero and the
Ecuadorean's inswinging cross ought to have been dealt with better but was
turned past Grimshaw via a flicked header from Duhaney. The goal-bound
delivery ensured the leveller could be credited as the midfielder's fifth
goal of the campaign.
The contest was every bit as well-matched as you would expect between
second and fourth in the league, with the hosts looking to close the
points gap on Simon Davies' side. Musonda saw a low shot blocked bravely
by Duhaney shortly after the restart before Nemane wasted a great chance,
trapping a pass in behind but miskicking his shot into the grateful gloves
of Collins.
Viveash made changes at the midway point of the second period, adding to
his half-time introduction of Dujon Sterling. Jacob Maddox and Mason Mount
came on to add an attacking impetus to the side but it was City
celebrating the game's fifth goal after 73 minutes.
The visitors made some neat passes on the edge of the box before referee
Kevin Friend pointed to the spot for a handball against Chalobah, even
though it looked like the ball had been played against the defender from
close range. However, Diaz was not in a forgiving mood and he confidently
rolled the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards to complete his
hat-trick.
A blow to the Blues, City sealed the points with 14 minutes remaining.
Substitute Buckley raced down the right flank and twisted this way and
that before firing beyond Collins into the far corner.
There was still time remaining to retain some hope and Scott worked a
sight at goal for himself but could only strike wide on his weaker left
foot. Substitute Denzeil Boadu then should have made it five for the
Citizens as he advanced clear through down the middle but could not beat
Collins, who stood up well to make the stop.
Just like in the reverse fixture in Manchester, Mount grabbed a goal in
the last minute of normal time to ensure a nervous finale. The midfielder
was on hand in the box to beat Grimshaw with a close-range finish from
Sterling's cross.
Yet City were able to hold on and inflict our first league defeat since
September. Viveash's side return to action next Friday 24 February with a
Premier League 2 trip to Arsenal, which will be screened live on Chelsea
TV.
