PL2 report: Chelsea 1 Everton 1
30 Oct 2021
Our development squad and the Toffees shared the spoils at Kingsmeadow in
a game that Andy Myers and his side will feel they could even have won.

Substitute Jayden Wareham equalised in the last minute of normal time to
give us a point after Everton opened the scoring early in the second half.
Myers' side will be disappointed that they were not able to capitalise on
the openings that were created as they could only manage a draw with in
the Saturday lunchtime kick-off. Everton opened the scoring through
striker Tom Cannon and did well to contain our boys.
However, a Lewis Baker free-kick in the final moments of the game found
the head of Wareham, who was on hand to prod home from inside the six-yard
box.
== Early dominance ==
Everton edged the opening exchanges in this one with good possession,
forcing the hosts to keep their shape while the ball was moved around in
their half. There was a period in the opening 20 minutes where our
development squad also showed their ability to keep the ball, however
there were no clear-cut chances being created.
The Toffees did have an opportunity as a snapshot in the box stung the
palms of Teddy Sharman-Lowe, who was starting in goal. Following that, a
long stoppage due to a switch in referee shifted the momentum totally in
our favour. George McEachran capitalised on some sloppy play out of the
back from the Merseyside outfit and he manoeuvred the ball onto his right
foot before squeezing in a shot on goal, which smashed the crossbar.

Everton were camped in their half and in the 28th minute of the game,
captain Xavier Simons sent an effort goalwards which was palmed away by
keeper Harry Tyler. Again we came back with the dangerous Rankine; after
beating his man he sent an inviting cross which, but for fingertips of the
keeper, Silko Thomas would have had an easy tap-in.
The biggest chance of the half fell to Thomas moments later. After a nice
cross-field ball from Baker, Thomas controlled well and beat his man. His
effort also beat the keeper but could only find the side-netting. The half
ended with Everton flirting around the Chelsea box but with no real
conviction.

== Unexpected restart ==
The second period started with the same intensity from our boys. Xavier
Simons smashed an effort over the bar, before a free header in the
18-yard box for Xavier Mbuyamba was straight at the keeper.

For all the pressure that our young Blues applied, Myers would not have
expected Everton to take the lead. Against the run of play, a counter
from the away side was initiated and found its way to their number nine
Cannon, who never broke stride and fired in a right-footed cross-shot
which beat keeper Sharman-Lowe.
The goal came as a shock but we almost equalised instantly through
Mbuyamba again, the young Dutch defender's header flying just over the
bar. It was clear that we were the dominant side but the cutting edge was
lacking.

Mbuyamba almost scoring from a corner
Everton hardly threatened in the game and their first effort following the
goal was a tame shot which Sharman-Lowe handled easily. Another attempt on
goal came from Soonsup-Bell. He cut a frustrated figure all game but his
attempted overhead kick after a lovely corner kick from Baker dropped
harmlessly wide.
Another well-worked move resulted in Brooking being challenged in the box
but the referee adjudged it to have not been a penalty despite the loud
claims from the fans and the players.
Despite us being a goal down, it was the Toffees who looked most likely to
grab a second as their game plan to soak up pressure and counter-attack
was working for them. A couple of efforts on goal showed their intent to
try and double their lead.
== Leaving it late ==
Our development squad failed to create anything clear-cut for large parts
of the second half despite the early dominance. It was not until the last
minute of normal time that subsitute Wareham stepped up to give us the
equaliser. Rankine won a free-kick after being fouled, Baker then
delieverd a delightful cross and Wareham's scrappy header eventually
found its way into the botttom corner.
That was all in this game as we came away with a point, leaving us 10th in
the Premier League 2 standings on 10 points after 10 games played. Next up
is a trip to Malmo in the UEFA Youth League before we return to
Kingsmeadow to host Crystal Palace next Saturday 6 November. Tickets for
that one are currently available online.
