PL2 report: Chelsea 0 Derby 1
24 Aug 2018
Our development squad suffered their first defeat of the season on a rainy
night at Stamford Bridge.

A positive start to the action failed to translate into an advantage on
the scoreboard for Joe Edwards's team before Derby County scored the only
goal of the game midway through the first half through first team striker
Chris Martin.
As our youngsters plotted a route back into the contest, their attacking
play was blunted and their efforts were hindered further when Charly
Musonda was sent off with 15 minutes remaining. It all combined to bring
about a first loss since the final day of last season on a disappointing
evening in SW6.
Tammy Abraham, Musonda and Marcin Bulka all came into the side for the
development squad's second outing of the season at Stamford Bridge. Their
involvement saw Edwards switch to a 4-3-3 shape with Abraham flanked by
Musonda and Callum Hudson-Odoi in a formidable-looking attack.
George McEachran, Luke McCormick and Billy Gilmour continued in central
midfield, with Tariq Lamptey, Joseph Colley, Marc Guehi and Juan Castillo
protecting Bulka in goal. Derby included Scotland internationals Martin
and Ikechi Anya in their starting team, with the Rams searching for their
first win of the new campaign.
The Blues were impressive in victory at Blackburn at the start of the week
and picked up where they had left off in Lancashire by creating chances
with encouraging frequency in the early stages. Josh Barnes had to spring
quickly off his line to smother the ball at the feet of McCormick early on
as the midfielder looked to dink the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper
inside five minutes.
The hosts continued to fashion opportunities, particularly through the
lively Lamptey on the right wing, and it was the 17-year-old who advanced
dangerously beyond Anya to feed a low pass inside to Abraham, though the
striker's shot was well-handled by Barnes.
Despite controlling the first quarter of the contest, Edwards's men soon
found themselves trailing as the visitors opened the scoring against the
run of play with their first attack of note. Timi Elsnik caused problems
through the heart of the back four with a jinking run past McEachran and
Guehi before providing the pass for Martin, who confidently swept the ball
beyond Bulka into the bottom corner.

It was a frustrating blow for the Blues and one that disrupted their
growing momentum, with Bulka soon called into action again to make a smart
stop and keep hold of Alex Babos's low drive from the edge of the box.
Down the other end, Hudson-Odoi was sharpening as a creative force and
displayed impressive vision to pick out the forward run of McCormick, who
did well to get a shot in at Derby's goal but without unduly troubling the
keeper.
Hudson-Odoi then delivered a perfect low centre across the face of goal
which appeared destined for McCormick's instep until a crucial toe from
Ethan Wassall diverted the ball to safety. As the hosts ended the half in
a threatening fashion, Abraham spurned the final chance with a shot skied
into the Shed Upper following good initial work from McEachran.
A lashing of west London rain greeted the teams as they returned after the
half-time interval but it was Derby who restarted brightest as the
temperature dropped a notch. Calum MacDonald tested Bulka with a curling
free-kick before Elsnik flashed an effort narrowly wide after Kellan
Gordon's delivery from the right.
After enjoying a confident start to the game, our youngsters were
struggling to get going again in the second half. Tariq Uwakwe's
introduction at the break, in place of McCormick, allowed Musonda to shift
infield but the switch failed to reignite their attacking fluidity.

Callum Hudson-Odoi on the ball at the Bridge
A tough task was compounded in difficulty when the Blues were reduced to
10 men after 74 minutes. Musonda was the man dismissed, the Belgian shown
a second yellow card after a clumsy foul on the halfway line just as
Edwards was primed to shuffle his pack. Daishawn Redan was seconds away
from entering the action as the hosts looked set for a switch in system
but those plans were swiftly shelved once our numerical disadvantage was
confirmed.
Derby were finding spaces more easily and Martin was thwarted only by a
last-ditch block just inside the 18-yard box before the forward fired a
wayward free-kick off-target. As the clock ticked down, Bulka kept the
hosts in the game with an acrobatic save to tip Babos's rising drive over
the crossbar, allowing the Blues one last chance to level in added time.
Abraham's efforts won a corner on the right and Uwakwe's inswinging
delivery found the towering striker six yards out, though his header flew
just over. It ended hopes of an unlikely comeback and leaves us with four
points from the opening three league outings of the campaign.
