PL2 report: Chelsea 0 Leicester 0
Fri 14 Oct 2016
Our development squad picked up a point at Aldershot this evening (Friday)
as they returned to action in Premier League 2 with a first game in three
weeks.
The Blues controlled proceedings for large portions of the game and
created far more clear-cut opportunities but were unable to beat the
visiting goalkeeper to claim all three points. Ike Ugbo came closest in
the first half with a curling shot that struck the post but, despite
playing the latter stages with a man down, the Foxes held on for a share
of the spoils.
Adi Viveash made four changes from their last outing, a Stamford Bridge
defeat to Arsenal. Josimar Quintero was unavailable for selection due to
international duty with Ecuador's Under-20s, while both Nathan Baxter and
Jake Clarke-Salter will be hoping to feature on loan this weekend, for
Metropolitan Police and Bristol Rovers respectively. Bradley Collins,
Fankaty Dabo, Joseph Colley and Jacob Maddox came into the team.
Dabo and Colley lined up alongside Fikayo Tomori and Jay Dasilva in a back
four protecting goalkeeper Collins. Trevoh Chalobah started in midfield
with Kyle Scott, while Maddox, Mason Mount and Dujon Sterling supported
Ugbo in attack.
The hosts created the entirety of the chances in the opening half hour and
dominated possession, albeit without breaking the early deadlock. Maddox
fired into the side netting from a tight angle on the left before Mount's
free-kick was comfortably gathered by Daniel Iversen, the Leicester
goalkeeper.
The visitors advanced only fleetingly and when they did threaten to
trouble Collins in the home goal, Danny Rowe's heavy first touch allowed
our defenders the opportunity to recover. Ugbo had netted twice in six
league appearances this term and he came closest to scoring in the first
half, first testing Iversen with a neat shot on the spin before rattling
the woodwork.
With 26 minutes on the clock, Mount deceived two Leicester defenders with
lightning feet on halfway before feeding the striker on the left flank.
The movement of Mount drew the space for Ugbo to roam into and his precise
curling effort had Iversen beaten but would not creep inside the far post.
Sterling and Mount then failed to trouble the visiting stopper from good
positions before Leicester rallied before the break, with Collins forced
to thwart Kairo Mitchell following a long ball forward and the goalkeeper
saving low from Rowe.
The Blues needed to find a more clinical cutting-edge in the final third
if they were to break down a resilient Foxes defence in the second period.
However, it was Leicester who threatened first after the restart with
Elliott Moore heading over from a left-sided corner before the centre-back
was required to intervene in his own 18-yard box moments later, blocking
bravely as Ugbo took aim.
Sterling blazed over but Viveash's side were frustrated with their
inability to create the chances of the first half. Harvey Barnes shot over
following a fortuitous deflection for the visitors that guided the ball
into his path before Darnell Johnson headed over from another corner.
Mount was handed another set-piece opportunity after Maddox was felled on
the edge of the box but this time the midfielder was unable to strike his
attempt on target. Leicester were reduced to 10 men with eight minutes
remaining as Lamine Sherif saw red for two bookings in quick succession.
The numerical advantage only added to the Chelsea momentum. Substitute
Harvey St Clair's low drive at the far post was blocked and Tomori fired
over wildly from close range following Chalobah's knockdown header in
stoppage time. That proved to be the final action of note in a goalless
encounter for the Blues.
Our development squad return to action next Tuesday 18 October when they
travel to St James's Park to take on Exeter City's first team in the
Checkatrade Trophy. Before then, our youth team host Reading at Cobham
tomorrow morning (Saturday) in the Under-18 Premier League live on Chelsea
TV. Kick-off is at 10.30am.
