Under-21s report: Tottenham 1 Chelsea 0
Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Our Under-21 side suffered their first defeat of the season this evening
(Monday).
A finely-balanced encounter saw opportunities at both ends, with Luke
McGee in the Spurs goal most notably saving from Fankaty Dabo and Ola
Aina, before Emmanuel Sonupe struck a winner in the last minute of normal
time to give the home side all three points.
== Team news ==
There were four changes from the side that started the 2-2 draw with
Fulham nine days previously, with Aina and Dabo returning to the back four
alongside Alex Davey and Todd Kane. Mitchell Beeney remained in goal as an
ever-present this season.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Houghton continued to anchor in midfield,
while Alex Kiwomya, Charly Musonda and Jeremie Boga formed the attacking
trio supporting the central striker. That forward role went to the
returning Dominic Solanke, fresh from making his first team debut in last
week's Champions League win over Maribor.
== First half ==
Both goalkeepers were called into early action in the contest as Ain's
lofted ball forward found Solanke, and the hosts required Luke McGee's
agility to rush off his line and smother the danger at the feet of the
striker. Down the other end, Beeney made a comfortable save as Cristian
Ceballos tested his palms from distance.
There was a high tempo to proceedings throughout the opening exchanges,
with the battle in midfield particularly frenetic, however Tottenham were
the side creating the clearer opportunities in the opening half an hour.
Beeney made a very good save from Joshua Onomah's low drive at his near
post following Kane's strong block, before the Blues keeper marshalled his
defence well to defend a series of Spurs corners.
The visitors responded as McGee made a good save to tip over Dabo's lashed
effort and then saved from Davey's header after Loftus-Cheek had clipped
an inviting ball into the box. Kane and Musonda combined down the right to
launch a quick break forward, with the defender cleverly sliding through
Solanke, however the striker's drive was held well by the home goalkeeper.
Beeney saved again from the lively Ceballos in the final moments and
Musonda's wicked delivery from a left-sided corner was cleared well as an
even half came to a conclusion.
== Second half ==
Viveash made a switch at the break as Charlie Colkett entered the game in
midfield, and the visitors came close to taking the lead after just a
couple of minutes of the restart as Musonda flashed a left-footed shot
narrowly over the bar from 20 yards.
Kane's energy down the right was providing a useful attacking weapon for
the Blues and his driven cross proved dangerous but just evaded the
supporting attackers. Moments later, the right-back had to be alert in
his own box as he blocked well from Will Miller's close-range shot.
An intricate Tottenham passage of play after 65 minutes fashioned an
opening for Miller again, however Beeney met the imminent danger quickly
and made the stop. Harry Winks then fired wide after good work down the
left channel from Ceballos, before a great chance came Chelsea's way.
Musonda led the charge forward on a quick counter-attack and he slid
through a brilliantly-weighted pass for the galloping Aina, however the
defender's attempt to clip the ball over the onrushing McGee lacked power
and the goalkeeper got enough on the ball to divert its path to safety.
The momentum swung both ways during a tense finale, with Dabo advancing
from left-back and firing over before a deflected strike from Kiwomya
after cutting in from the left was pushed away expertly by McGee. Winks
bent an effort just over Beeney's bar before Ugo Ehiogu's side grabbed a
last-minute winner.
Substitute Daniel Akindayini found Sonupe in the box with a good pass and
the midfielder did the rest as he rifled in his finish from close range
with Beeney stranded. There was still time remaining for Viveash's team to
fashion one last chance as substitute Kyle Scott pulled his shot over
following a cut-back corner routine.
== Manager reaction ==
Viveash reflected afterwards on a disappointing end to a pleasing
performance. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'The
players are obviously hurting in the dressing room because to concede so
late is always difficult. I thought it was a high-level game against a
very good team and a point would probably have been the right result after
such an even match.
'We're disappointed with the nature of the goal; it's a free strike from
18 yards but we spoke at half-time about that one moment losing
concentration potentially costing us.'
The manager also credited the opposition goalkeeper with a couple of key
saves and said Aina's chance midway through the second half was a crucial
moment of the match.
'Ola was outstanding all night for us and it was a great run by him and a
superbly-timed pass from Musonda. I was expecting him to go round the
keeper but he's gone for the chip and it's a match-winning save. We maybe
needed a bit more cutting edge in the final third but their keeper has
made three outstanding saves.
'We're pleased with the efforts of the players and especially in the
second half when we had a 15-minute spell where they really put us under
pressure. We came through that and then went again, which for young
players is fantastic and I certainly won't forget a lot of the good things
we did tonight.
'We're at the end of October now and we've lost our first game of the
season but it's about how we react. Our next league game is Manchester
United at the Bridge so it's a fantastic game to prepare for and look for
a reaction in.'
Next up for the Academy is a league trip to Reading for the Under-18s this
Saturday 1 November, before our Under-19s resume their UEFA Youth League
campaign with a trip to Maribor on Wednesday 5 November.
