Under-21s report: Chelsea 3 Reading 3
Fri 25 Sep 2015
Chelsea Under-21s came from behind to lead but then conceded late on as
they were forced to share the league points with Reading at Stamford
Bridge this evening (Friday).
Rowan Liburd had given the visitors the lead inside 20 minutes before a
penalty converted by Tammy Abraham and a header from Dion Conroy either
side of half-time put the hosts in front.
Kasey Palmer extended that advantage midway through the second period
before a late comeback from Reading. Liburd notched his second of the
evening with a hooked finish from a right-sided cross and Liam Kelly
snatched a point for the Royals with a free-kick in stoppage time.
Adi Viveash made five changes from the side that beat Liverpool in the
International Cup a fortnight previously, with Bradley Collins, Jake
Clarke-Salter, Jay Dasilva, Bertrand Traore and Abraham all returning to
the team.
Collins started in goal protected by a back four of Ola Aina, Conroy,
Kevin Wright and Clarke-Salter. Abraham led the line up front supported by
Bertrand Traore, Palmer and Charly Musonda. John Swift partnered Dasilva
in central midfield.
There were opportunities at either end during an energetic opening 10
minutes as Musonda's left-footed shot was gathered comfortably by Lewis
Ward in the Reading goal, before Andrija Novakovich capitalised on an
error from Conroy and lashed a strike just wide of the far post.
Abraham then poked narrowly wide after a neat turn following a pass from
Palmer and Traore placed a bending strike off-target before the visitors
grabbed the opening goal in the 20th minute. Striker Liburd escaped down
the left, advanced into the box and curled his finish into the far corner
beyond the dive of Collins to notch his seventh league goal of the
campaign.
Reading skipper Pierce Sweeney fired over the bar as the game remained a
fairly open affair, with Swift shooting similarly over down the other end.
The midfielder was then denied by Ward having been released through the
middle by Palmer's forward pass, the visiting stopper making himself big
at Swift's feet to push the ball away to safety.
Collins was then forced into an identical stop for Viveash's side to keep
the deficit to one as he utilised reactions and agility to get down
quickly to deny Liburd a second goal. That save proved even more
significant as the Blues levelled a minute later.
Musonda advanced into the box and was upended by a sliding challenge from
Sean Long, with Abraham stepping up from 12 yards out. The striker sent
Ward the wrong way with his spot-kick, bulging the back of the net for his
third goal of the campaign.
Ward then excelled again between the sticks for the visitors as he kept
out Musonda's effort at the end of a dazzling run, with the sides going in
level at the interval.
The second period began at a slightly slower pace than the first had been
played at, though it took just nine minutes before Chelsea went in front
for the first time in the game. Musonda swung a teasing free-kick delivery
in from the right flank and Conroy beat the goalkeeper with a stooping
header from close range.
It was a confidence-boosting goal that kick-started a period of dominance
from Chelsea, with Palmer bringing a save from Ward, Musonda dragging a
shot wide and Abraham blazing over. Swift and Musonda then combined
brilliantly as the former laid the ball off perfectly for the latter with
a lovely back-heel, however the final effort failed to trouble the keeper.
Yet the Blues soon grabbed the crucial third goal they were seeking to
hand themselves a cushion in the game. Abraham chested down Aina's
throw-in into the path of Palmer and the midfielder, who bagged a
hat-trick last time out against Liverpool, produced a neat side-footed
finish into the far corner.
Reading continued to remain a threat and reduced the deficit with 10
minutes remaining, Long's cross flicked on by substitute Nana Owusu and
diverted past Collins by the clinical Liburd. The big striker then had a
chance to complete his hat-trick but once again found Collins in his way
with the goalkeeper producing a good stop down low to his left.
Yet the Blues stopper could do nothing to keep out Liam Kelly's fine
bending free-kick in stoppage time, which flew into the top corner and
earned the Royals a point.

After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on an evening where his side dropped
two home league points. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said:
'I'm very disappointed. We lacked intensity and we were too slow and
static in the first half against a well-drilled team.
'The first half was a bit like a basketball game and that's certainly not
what we're looking for. In the second half, we were outstanding for 20
minutes; we scored two goals but also missed three big chances and that
came back to cost us.
'We have to manage the game better at 3-1 and then at 3-2, especially with
the experienced players we had on the pitch. They were two poor goals to
concede late on and we're conceding too many goals at the moment, which is
hurting us.'
The Under-21s are next in action on Friday 16 October when they take on
Benfica in their second International Cup group game. Before then, Joe
Edwards's youth team host Brighton at Cobham tomorrow morning (Saturday).
The game is an 11am kick-off and can be watched live exclusively on this
website with a FanClub+ membership.
