Under-18s report: West Ham 2 Chelsea 0
Sat 19 Sep 2015
Chelsea Under-18s went down to their first defeat of the season this
morning (Saturday) as they were beaten by a strong and determined West
Ham.
The home side took the lead midway through the first half through defender
Declan Rice, before Blues goalkeeper Nathan Baxter saved Joe Powell's
penalty. However, the Hammers extended their advantage before the interval
courtesy of schoolboy striker Idris Kanu and then defended brilliantly
throughout the second period to record a clean sheet and their first win
of the campaign.
Joe Edwards made one change from the side that came from behind to beat
Leicester City a week previously as Hubert Adamczyk replaced Charlie
Wakefield out wide. The Polish youth international joined Jacob Maddox and
Harvey St Clair in supporting Miro Muheim in attack.
Isaac Christie-Davies and Ruben Sammut partnered each other in central
midfield, with captain Josh Grant, Joseph Colley, Ali Suljic and Trevoh
Chalobah protecting Baxter in goal.
West Ham edged the opening exchanges and Baxter was forced into action
inside a minute as he denied Grady Diangana following a cross from the
right. The goalkeeper then pushed Matthew Carter's free-kick around the
post with a smart stop to his right before the Hammers' bright start was
rewarded with the opener.
Kanu was thwarted by another impressive save from Baxter but the
goalkeeper could do nothing to keep out the rebound as Rice fired a
half-volley into the back of the net.
The Blues looked for a quick response and Sam Howes made an impressive
flying save to push the ball over the bar as a header from his own
defender Jake Eggleton looked destined for the top corner.
Moments later, the home side were gifted a chance to double their
advantage as the referee awarded them a rather soft penalty against
Colley. Powell stepped up from 12 yards out but was denied by another
super stop from Baxter, who flung to his right to push the ball away to
safety.
Yet West Ham did grab a second goal after 36 minutes as Kanu advanced
towards the box and curled his strike into the far top corner with the aid
of a hefty deflection.
Edwards made changes at the break to both personnel and the team's shape,
with Dujon Sterling and Cole Dasilva introduced as the side switched to a
3-4-2-1 system. The Blues were brighter as a result and Muheim fired low
into the side netting shortly after the restart before Baxter was again
required down the other end to save Noha Sylvestre's drive.
The Hammers were required to defend strongly throughout the second period
as we pushed forward but they were more than up to the task. Pask stopped
St Clair in his tracks as the wideman advanced into the box with a
perfectly-timed sliding tackle to demonstrate the hosts' strength at the
back.
They also carried a counter-attacking threat and came close to adding a
third goal as Diangana broke forward and released Kanu, however the
striker's low effort across goal trickled beyond the far post.
The visitors were being marshalled well but, when they did carve out
opportunities, were let down by their finishing. Muheim's header at the
front post from St Clair's corner drifted wide and then Sammut's header in
space was gathered at the second attempt by Howes, again following a
teasing St Clair centre from the left.
In the end, it was the hosts who came closest to getting on the scoresheet
again late on as Powell fired over and Baxter again denied the West Ham
number seven with another fine save. In truth, the goalkeeper was the
visitors' best player as their unbeaten start to the season came to an end.

After the game, Joe Edwards reflected on a disappointing morning for his
side. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a real
off-day for us. West Ham were fully deserving of their lead at half-time
because they punished us and then showed a lot of desire in the second
half.
'It's a big learning curve for the boys. One of the things we've talked
about in recent games has been our mentality and we were very good in that
respect last week at Leicester. You need to compete with these teams who
are in your face and show a lot of desire but we weren't quite there today.
'When you are off the pace and start sluggish against a team like that then
it's always hard to get back into the game. We got what we deserved but now
we have to learn from it and bounce back next week.'
