Under-18s report: West Ham 0 Chelsea 5

20 Oct 2018

Andy Myers' side recorded their biggest win of the season to make it six
consecutive victories in all competitions, thanks largely to a first-half
dismantling of West Ham United.

The Blues' forward play was just too much for the Hammers to handle in
east London, as we raced into a 4-0 lead before the break. Tino Anjorin
got things started when he got on the end of Marcel Lewis' free-kick and
we never looked back, Henry Lawrence and Marcel Lewis both showing
excellent feet to get space in the box and punish the West Ham defence,
before Thierno Ballo headed in his first. Another from Ballo just after
the break put the game to bed.

Myers kept faith with the back three of Sam McClelland, Jack Wakely and
Dynel Simeu, although behind them Karlo Ziger came in for Jake Askew in
goal. The midfield four also remained the same from our last match, a 2-1
win at Brighton, although in attack Thierno Ballo moved into the central
striker's role, with Marcel Lewis and Tino Anjorin coming in to support
him in place of George Nunn and Armando Broja.

It took just five minutes to get our first sight of goal, as Marcel
Lavinier cut in from the right wing and got a shot away, but a deflection
took all the power off it and allowed the keeper to gather comfortably.

We kept mounting the pressure, though, with Lewis putting a free-kick wide
and Anjorin shooting straight at the keeper. However, the latter made no
mistake with his next chance. Lavinier, who was causing West Ham plenty of
problems on the right, was brought down wide of the box and Lewis curled
in a dangerous free-kick. Ballo's attempt to get on the end of it was
blocked, but Anjorin was there to slide the rebound home from close range
and give us the lead on 13 minutes.

It only took another four minutes for us to double the advantage, and the
goal came out of seemingly nothing. There seemed little danger when
Lawrence received the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal,
but with one spin was in behind the West Ham defence and calmly poked the
ball past the onrushing keeper.

The floodgates had been opened and we looked like we would score every
time we went forward, and it was 3-0 after just 20 minutes. Again, it owed
a lot to a piece of brilliant individual skill, although defender Sam
McClelland also deserves credit for the fast thinking and vision to
release Lewis with a quickly taken free kick. Lewis still had a lot to do,
though, seemingly trapped by the byline, but twisted outside and then
inside to leave his marker trailing and slot the ball under the keeper at
the near post.

It was four before half-an-hour had been played. Ian Maatsen's deep cross
from the left was kept alive by Marcel Tavinier at the back post, and his
chipped pass back across goal was perfectly weighted for Ballo to meet it
and head in from six yards.

After 30 minutes West Ham finally managed their first shot of the game,
but Parkes hit it high and wide before being flagged offside anyway.

Jon Russell came within inches of scoring the best goal of the game, when
his dipping placed effort from outside of the box didn't quite curl enough
to fall inside the right-hand post with the goalkeeper well beaten.

There was just enough time before the break for the home team to provide
their first real threat to Karlo Ziger's goal, as Amadou Diallo
dispossessed Lewis in our own half and drove towards goal, but his
powerful effort struck the outside of the near post.

We nearly scored right from the restart after half-time, when Lewis lifted
a great pass over the back line for Anjorin, but he was forced wide when
rounding the keeper and the chance had gone. The pressure was clearly
telling, as West Ham keeper Joseph Anang made a mess of another Russell
long-ranger, this time much tamer, and nearly fumbled it into the net.

As it was, we didn't have to wait long for another goal. This time
Russell's shot was deflected and looked like it might have been heading
in, but Ballo was on hand to make sure by sliding the ball across the line
to make it 5-0.

That knocked the remaining fight out of the West Ham players and allowed
us to control the rest of the match, content to keep possession with our
healthy lead. That doesn't mean we weren't still threatening more goals,
though, with Maatsen desperately unlucky not to get his name on the score
sheet after running free down the left channel and driving a shot low
across goal, only to see it come back off the base of the post.

Blues defender Dynel Simeu was forced off, having appeared to struggle
with a knock after landing in a tangle with Diallo following an aerial
challenge, being replaced by Pierre Ekwah Elimby with 20 minutes left.

West Ham's Joshua Okotcha was a little fortunate to escape a booking for a
crunching challenge on Maatsen, but got away with a warning as the game
wound down.

There was just enough time for Russell to again try to get his name on the
score sheet, shooting high and hard after Lavinier's cut back from the
right, but Anang beat the ball away at his near post.

We controlled the closing stages to complete our biggest win of the season
so far and, just as significantly, register our first clean sheet of the
2018/19 campaign.

Under-18s reaction: Pleasing all round

20 Oct 2018

After seeing his players record their biggest win and first clean sheet of
the season, there was plenty to make Andy Myers happy in our victory at
West Ham United.

We raced into a four-goal lead in the first half and continued to dominate
to finish up as 5-0 winners in Romford. The victory was a real team
effort, underlined by there being four different names on the score sheet.
It could even have been five, with Jon Russell's deflected shot looking
goal-bound before striker Thierno Ballo pounced to make sure it crossed
the line for his second, in addition to strikes from Tino Anjorin, Henry
Lawrence and Marcel Lewis.

'Ballo's claiming two and as far as I know if it hasn't crossed the line
when you touch it, it's your goal. That's the rules,' grinned Myers after
the match. 'It was nice that the scorers were mixed around a little bit,
and Jon could have popped up with a couple as well. It's pleasing that the
goals are being shared and everybody's chipping in, contributing on and
off the ball.

'It was very pleasing in the way we set up off the ball, to try and win it
back, and using the ideas we've been working on in training. It's always
pleasing as coaches for me and Jon Harley to see the things we work on
when they're playing on the training field come out in the match. The
players applied themselves really well.'

Thierno Ballo scored two of our five goals at West Ham.

Although the high scoreline naturally draws attention to the forward
players, Myers was also impressed by the performance of the Chelsea
players further back.

'The philosophy at Chelsea is to get our back players playing, it's
important to us that they can play and get us started. They did that in
this match. They did the first bit well, when West Ham pressed quite high
for the first 20 minutes, then when they dropped off and it became
different, they had to find that other key to open them up, so they
stepped in with the ball a little bit more.

'That's what we're trying to develop. That's what the philosophy is with
the coaches at Chelsea, trying to get our defenders as comfortable on the
ball as possible, but not just playing a short pass, looking for passes
that are a little bit more direct as well, because you need that too.'

What is more, despite the five goals scored, it was the lack of any
conceded which pleased him more than anything else.

'The biggest thing was that we kept a clean sheet, because we haven't had
one all season,' he continued. 'For us, just as big as scoring goals is
keeping goals out, so it was pleasing that we did finish with no goals
against.

'We've had games like this previously, in terms of not giving them many
chances, but the goals have gone in. I think it was deserved this time and
it was really pleasing that we haven't conceded any goals, because we have
been doing that this season. As a coach, if you don't keep the goals out
you've got no platform to build on, so it's nice to be able to do that
this time.'
