Under-18s report: West Bromwich Albion 1 Chelsea 1

Mon, 19 Jan 2015

Chelsea's Under-18s picked up a point on their league travels today
(Monday), a result that extends our lead at the top of the Premier League
southern section to five points.

Joe Edwards' side went behind after half an hour courtesy of a strike from
defender Joshua Ezewele before, after much second-half pressure,
centre-back Ali Suljic powered in a headed equaliser in the final minute
of the game.

== Team news ==

It was the first league action of 2015 for the youth team and there were
five changes from their last outing, a 5-2 victory at West Ham in
December. Top goalscorer Tammy Abraham led the line up front supported
from out wide by Isaac Christie-Davies and Hubert Adamczyk, the latter
making his first start for the club.

Bradley Collins continued in goal behind a back four of Charlie Wakefield,
Ola Aina, Suljic and schoolboy Josh Grant. Kyle Scott and Ruben Sammut
kept their places in midfield, with Mukhtar Ali returning to the side to
complete the trio.

== First half ==

The game started brightly in the Midland sunshine and both goalkeepers
were called into action early on. Collins denied Jack Fitzwater with a
good stop from close range after five minutes before Abraham was thwarted
by Matthew Hall in the Albion goal following a clever ball through from
Christie-Davies.

The visitors then took control of the game in the next 25 minutes,
dominating possession and creating good opportunities. Hall came off his
line and made himself big at the feet of Adamczyk to make the save after a
dinked pass forward from Scott, while Grant poked a loose ball just wide
following a left-sided corner.

West Brom snatched a goal to take the lead after half an hour and it came
at the end of a quick counter-attack. Fitzwater delivered a searching ball
out to the right from defence and full-back Ezewele managed to escape in
behind the Blues backline. His touch set him up nicely and he held off the
challenge of a recovering defender before slotting the ball confidently
beyond Collins for the opener.

Edwards' side responded immediately as Abraham tested Hall, though the
hosts might have doubled their advantage minutes later as Jack Hallahan
beat three defenders before forcing another save from Collins, with
captain Philip Gannon firing over from the rebound.

We ended the half on a positive note as Ali brought a low stop from the
goalkeeper and then Scott's dipping half-volley was tipped over the bar
brilliantly.

== Second half ==

Adamczyk flicked a half-chance just wide and then Scott forced another
excellent save from Hall in the home goal as the goalkeeper acrobatically
tipped his 30-yard drive over the crossbar.

The second period play followed a similar and predictable theme, with
Chelsea enjoying plenty of the ball but finding it difficult to break
through a deep and committed Albion rearguard.

When they did manage to find a way through, they were met by a goalkeeper
in impressive form and he produced another very good stop to push
Adamczyk's drive from the edge of the box over the crossbar.

Andre Wright reminded the young Blues they could still be punished on the
break as he curled an effort narrowly wide but the traffic was one-way as
West Brom attempted to hold on.

Abraham flashed a shot wide and then Ali had an effort smuggled off the
line before the pressure finally paid off.

A deep corner from the left was floated towards the back post and
centre-back Suljic rose highest to thump a powerful header into the
corner.

There was still time remaining for one last chance to grab a winner and it
required some brilliant defending from Fitzwater on the line to keep the
Blues at bay.

Substitute Faiq Bolkiah fed Abraham and the striker's quick ball across
goal looked like it might cause serious problems for the Baggies defence.
Fitzwater, however, arrived in the nick of time to make a sliding
intervention on the line.

Next up for the Academy is a trip to West Ham for the Under-21s on Friday
23 January, a game that is being screened live on Chelsea TV. The
following morning, our Under-18s host Norwich City at Cobham in their next
league outing.

== Manager reaction ==

Joe Edwards admitted he had mixed emotions after seeing his side claim a
late equaliser. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'We're
pleased with the attitude we showed but a bit disappointed with the
quality of our performance.

'We showed a good attitude towards the end when we were having to push for
a goal and dig in but this is the second time this week we've come up
against a team happy to sit off and stop us doing what we like to do. The
difference was we had a bit of extra quality in the final third against
Huddersfield in the Youth Cup and today we just didn't show enough.

'It's a frustrating day for us overall because we've spoken about how we
want to win this league and these are games where we need to be coming
away with wins. We were pleased to have Ola back involved and he did well
and obviously it's great to have Hubert available now too; his work-rate
in training on a daily basis has been excellent for someone with the
disappointment of not having the opportunity to play so we look forward to
his involvement now going forward.'
