Under-18s report: Norwich 1-4 Chelsea
Sat 8 Aug 2015
Chelsea Under-18s started the season with victory at Norwich City this
morning (Saturday). Ali Suljic's powerful header put the young Blues ahead
and their advantage was stretched as Ike Ugbo grabbed two goals in 11
minutes.
Harley Black's arrowing drive briefly reduced the deficit before Ugbo
completed his hat-trick late on with another neat finish.
== Team news ==
Joe Edwards started the 2015/16 league campaign with six new scholars in
his starting side, plus schoolboy defender Dujon Sterling. Second-years
Ruben Sammut and Mukhtar Ali added experience to the team in midfield,
with Isaac Christie-Davies, Jacob Maddox and Harvey St Clair lining up in
front of the duo.
Ugbo notched 11 goals last term while still a schoolboy and he led the
line up front. Sterling joined captain Josh Grant, Trevoh Chalobah and
Suljic in defence, protecting Nathan Baxter in goal.
== First half ==
It was a competitive start from both sides in sunny Norfolk as
Christie-Davies twice tested the handling of home goalkeeper Aston
Oxborough in the opening half hour, while Suljic made an important
intervention on the line to clear the danger as George Couzens' effort
appeared to be creeping in.
Chances were largely limited in the first half though, with much of the
action taking place in the midfield battleground as the Canaries sat deep
and gathered numbers behind the ball. The deadlock was broken after 37
minutes and Swedish centre-back Suljic was at the heart of the move.
The defender brought the ball confidently out from the back and started an
incisive attacking move, which saw the ball end up with the lively
Sterling on the right wing. The Under-16 had been involved in most of our
attacking endeavours early on and his delivery dropped perfectly for
Suljic, who had continued his forward run into the box and powered a
header past the helpess Oxborough.
The 17-year-old almost had a second moments later as he connected to a
free-kick from St Clair, although Suljic couldn't quite make contact with
the fizzing delivery and the goalkeeper punched to safety.
== Second half ==
Joe Edwards' side wasted no time after the restart in extending their
lead. England Under-17 striker Ugbo was the man celebrating as he
capitalised on more good work down the right from Sterling, poking home on
the rebound from close range after Christie-Davies' shot had been parried
away.
Oxborough kept out St Clair's deep swinging free-kick as he back-pedalled
swiftly to thwart the danger before Ugbo doubled his own tally with a
powerful finish into the bottom far corner from just inside the penalty
area.
The hosts still carried a threat and Todd Cantwell saw his low shot
deflected at the end of a quick counter-attack before Black finished
emphatically from 25 yards out with a first-time strike that flew past
Baxter and nestled into the far corner.
Yet there was never a real danger of Norwich launching a comeback in the
game and Ugbo ensured he would be taking the match ball home with another
neat close-range finish following substitute Charlie Wakefield's cross
from the left.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards reflected afterwards on a pleasing start to the season.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'Norwich is always a
difficult place to come and get a result so for us to start with a win
here is really pleasing.
'On top of the result, it was also a good performance because often
Norwich can be a difficult opponent with the way they set up to stop us. I
felt today they had several good players in their team and it was a good,
competitive game.
'The first half was quite even but we kept working to our game plan, which
was to switch the play often and attack them down the sides. I think the
way we did that in the first half caught up with Norwich in the second
half and we started to open them up a lot more.
'Seeing your front player get a hat-trick in the first game is obviously a
big plus and we've asked Ike to see how close he can get to Tammy
Abraham's tally from last season. However, it wasn't just about his goals
today because he put in an incredible shift up front in quite hot
conditions and I felt that approach spread throughout the team in the
second half. We were constantly pressing and didn't let them get a
foothold in the game.'
The youth team are back in action next Saturday 15 August when they host
Aston Villa at Cobham. Before then, our Under-21s travel to Liverpool
tomorrow (Sunday) in their league opener, a game which can be seen live on
BT Sport with kick-off at 11.30am, before Adi Viveash's side host
Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Friday 14 August. Tickets are currently
available online.
