Under-18s report: Man City 2 Chelsea 0
Sat 8 Apr 2017
Chelsea Under-18s suffered a first defeat since September as they were
beaten in Manchester.
Tom Dele-Bashiru's goal after 17 minutes put the hosts ahead before Jody
Morris's side were left to regret a second-half penalty miss as they
dropped league points for the first time in eight outings. Taylor Richards
made the points safe with a strike on the break in stoppage time.
Morris made three changes from last weekend's win over the red side from
Manchester, with Jared Thompson, Joseph Colley and Luke McCormick coming
in to the team. Thompson returned in goal behind a back three of Reece
James, Marc Guehi and Colley, while McCormick partnered captain Jacob
Maddox in central midfield.
Martell Taylor-Crossdale started up front bidding to net his 20th goal of
the season and he was aided by a supporting cast of George McEachran and
Callum Hudson-Odoi. Cole Dasilva and Juan Castillo were the wing-backs.
Billed as a dress rehearsal for the two-legged FA Youth Cup final between
these sides later in the month, in reality many of the cup regulars were
in action the previous evening for their respective PL2 teams. Adi
Viveash's side beat Sunderland 3-0 at Stamford Bridge with a quintet of
our Youth Cup semi-final side involved and Morris's starting 11 had more
of a familiar league feel about it.
In the Manchester sunshine at City's Academy Stadium, the contest took a
while to heat up and the opening quarter of an hour was a cat-and-mouse
affair as both sides tried to work each other out. Guehi defended a cross
from the left well before the game burst into life with a flurry of
opportunities and an early breakthrough goal.
Debutant Benjamin Garre had the first sight at goal but was unable to turn
a right-sided delivery past Thompson before the Blues immediately went
down the other end and McEachran tested Arijanet Muric, the City
goalkeeper, with a well-struck effort that the Swiss youngster parried to
safety.
Lee Carsley's side took the lead moments later, capitalising on some slack
possession play at the back and punishing the visitors as Dele-Bashiru
fired the ball into the bottom far corner with precision and power from 20
yards out.
It was a blow to the Blues but their dramatic late win last weekend was
evidence of the spirit and determination in the ranks and they looked for
a swift response. Castillo fired in a free-kick following a foul on
Taylor-Crossdale but Muric collected comfortably before Hudson-Odoi
provided more testing work for the home keeper, cutting inside from the
right before his shot was pushed clear.
With an advantage established, the hosts could utilise the counter-attack
and they fashioned decent openings to cross without picking out a man in
the box. Muric smothered at the feet of Castillo before Phil Foden went
close just before the break, driving the ball inches past the far post.
Morris made a midfield switch at the interval, replacing McCormick with
Tariq Uwakwe and the league leaders carved out a chance to level straight
from the restart. McEachran advanced down the right and picked out
Taylor-Crossdale but the striker failed to take control and the
opportunity quickly passed.
Yet the Blues continued to up the pressure on and forced City to defend
their lead. A succession of low crosses were cut out and cleared before a
golden opportunity was presented. James had moments earlier made a crucial
block to prevent Foden's shot troubling Thompson before he was stepping up
from 12 yards down the other end. Joe Coveney was the man penalised for
sending McEachran tumbling in the box but Muric bailed out his
centre-half, diving low to his left to thwart the spot-kick.
City, winners of this elite round last term, were looking to bounce back
from dropped points in their opening game, a 2-2 draw with Man United. As
our own past experience in this eight-team mini-league would testify,
there is only a small margin for error and the hosts came close to sealing
the points with 25 minutes remaining. Lorenzo Gonzalez picked up the ball
and took aim from distance, thumping the inside of the post with Thompson
scrambling.
The striker was then denied by a vital interception from Guehi just yards
from goal before Thompson gathered a pair of routine efforts from
Dele-Bashiru and Garre. Chasing a leveller, the contest opened up and both
goalkeepers were busy in the final 15 minutes. Uwakwe stung the palms of
Muric after patient build-up play, while Thompson readjusted his feet
quickly to keep out Foden's heavily-deflected attempt.
There were chances to steal a point late on, Hudson-Odoi denied at the end
of a mazy dribble into the City box and Taylor-Crossdale shooting tamely
at Muric after a promising attack. In the end, Morris's men drew a blank
for only the second time this season, conceding a second in added time as
substitute Richards poked in the rebound from Bobby Duncan's saved shot.
Our youngsters return to action in Manchester on Tuesday 18 April for the
first leg of the FA Youth Cup final, a trophy we have lifted in each of
the past three years. The second leg is at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 26
April and tickets are now on general sale.
