Under-18s report: Leicester City 0 Chelsea 1
Sat, 30 Aug 2014
Our Under-18 side produced a resolute performance in the East Midlands and
came away victorious courtesy of a late Ike Ugbo goal.
It was a game of few chances but when one fell the young striker's way
from a corner with five minutes remaining, he finished at the second
attempt.
That set-piece was delivered by Isaac Christie-Davies and met powerfully
by George Brady, who showed great desire to attack the ball. The Leicester
keeper could only parry his header and Ugbo did the rest after using his
feet cleverly to manoeuvre a close-range shooting opportunity.
Manager Joe Edwards set his side out in a 4-4-2 formation, deploying a
diamond formation in midfield. That helped the young Blues dictate
possession in the first 45 minutes but without creating any genuine
goalscoring opportunities. Aware of our control of the ball Leicester sat
off us meaning space to operate with in the final third was at a premium.
In the second half Leicester pressed higher up the pitch to stop
goalkeeper Bradley Collins playing out from the back, as had been the case
before the break. This led to the ball spending much more time in the air
than earlier in the match and that fact, coupled with the windy
conditions, led to a scrappy affair.
We more than matched a physically strong Foxes side in that department but
when Mukhtar Ali missed a good opportunity with 20 minutes remaining, it
looked like our chance of victory had passed, until Ugbo's decisive, late
intervention.
The home side's best opportunity arose when Collins inadvertently punched
a corner against his own crossbar when trying to deal with a dangerous
delivery. Set-pieces and crosses from wide were what caused us most
problems throughout the match but we defended stoutly and secured a
well-earned away win, all the more satisfying following last weekend's
heavy loss at Arsenal, as noted by Edwards after the game.
'It's a big result for us,' he said. 'Obviously we had a difficult result
last week. The 5-1 scoreline was emphatic though I don't think it really
reflected the game. Nonetheless the scoreline was a big defeat to suffer
so we wanted to bounce straight back.
'Historically Leicester away is a difficult place for us to come as an
Academy. It was a great result for us for two reasons: firstly because of
the nature of the fixture and secondly because of what happened last week.
'The performance was as you would expect. There were parts where the game
was scrappy. It was very even and at times we had to dig in and get where
we could. We didn't look like creating that opening but Ike showed great
calmness in front of goal to get us the win.'
