Under-18 report: Southampton 2 Chelsea 2
Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Our Under-18s came from 2-0 down to earn a point away at Southampton today
(Friday).
First-half goals from Olufela Olomola and Josh Sims gave the hosts a
two-goal lead at the break before Isaac Christie-Davies reduced the
deficit with a brilliant chipped finish. That set the scene for late drama
as substitute Tammy Abraham grabbed an equaliser with four minutes
remaining and was then denied a winner in stoppage time as his header was
hooked clear off the line.
== Team news ==
There were 10 changes from the side that started last week's 3-0 home
victory over Arsenal, with only goalkeeper Bradley Collins keeping his
place. Under-16 defenders Josh Grant and Trevoh Chalobah came into the
defence alongside Charlie Wakefield and Ali Suljic.
Youth team regulars Ruben Sammut, Mukhtar Ali and Isaac Christie-Davies
comprised the midfield trio, while Faiq Bolkiah led the line up front
supported by Miro Muheim and Kasey Palmer.
The Saints made four changes from the corresponding fixture, on the
opening day of the campaign, as they looked for the points against the
league leaders.
== First half ==
It was a probing opening from both sides on an overcast afternoon on the
South Coast, although opportunities were limited until Saints striker
Olufela Olomola flashed a shot past the far post after 11 minutes. Sammut
sliced wide on his weaker left foot after Muheim had cut the ball back
cleverly from the right before Collins made the first save of the game,
pushing Olomola's low drive away to safety.
The Blues were forced into some good defending as the hosts enjoyed a
strong spell midway through the half, threatening with a series of
corners, before Anthony Limbrick's side broke the deadlock just after half
an hour.
Southampton had the visitors penned in to their own half with some high
pressing and got the reward for their efforts as Olomola poked home Dan
Demkiv's low centre at the back post.
We looked to find a quick response and briefly threatened, however the
hosts were working hard and well-organised in midfield and defence. They
also remained dangerous themselves and soon doubled their advantage
moments before the interval.
An advance down the right flank caused problems and Josh Sims was gifted
the space to escape the attention of the defender and bend a curling
effort into the top corner beyond Collins.
== Second half ==
Edwards made a double switch at the interval as Jake Clarke-Salter and the
youth team's top goalscorer Tammy Abraham entered the fray.
The Blues restarted purposefully as Abraham almost got on the end of a
flowing attack involving Bolkiah and Christie-Davies.
Collins saved comfortably from former Chelsea academy defender Josh Debayo
and Abraham was thwarted only by an excellent last-ditch challenge when
clear through in behind, but the Saints defence were unable to keep the
league leaders at bay for much longer and we reduced the deficit after 56
minutes.
A cross in from the left caused problems and Christie-Davies was able to
get the ball under control and then execute a sublime chip over Harry
Isted in the Southampton goal that nestled in the far corner.
That opened the contest up and stretched the game, with both sides
fashioning clear-cut chances as the half wore on. Wakefield dragged a
volley wide before Demkiv thumped the far post with a curling strike after
cutting inside from the right flank.
Abraham came agonisingly close to grabbing the leveller as a good chance
was created down the right channel and the striker lifted the ball over
the head of the onrushing Isted towards goal, though Ollie Cook's
intervention proved decisive as he headed clear off the line. Isted then
made an excellent save to deny Christie-Davies after a one-two with
Abraham as Edwards' side pushed strongly in the final exchanges.
Our endeavours eventually paid off as a bright move forward brought
progress and Abraham provided the expert finish as he lifted the ball over
Isted and completed the fightback to seal a point for his team, netting
his 19th goal of the campaign in all competitions.
The Blues could have grabbed a winner in stoppage time as Abraham met a
corner from the right with an arrowing header, though substitute Armani
Little was well-positioned on the line to clear the danger and ensure the
points were shared.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards expressed mixed emotions after the game. Speaking to the
official Chelsea website, he said: 'We had enough chances to win the game
but I didn't think we played well really.
'We changed the team with the Youth Cup on Tuesday a little bit in mind so
it was a good opportunity for some of the scholars to step up. We had a
slightly different game plan, with a couple of schoolboys in defence
making it a young back line, but we didn't get enough control of the game
and didn't deal with the second balls at all well.'
Edwards was pleased with the character he was able to summon from the
bench.
'We brought on character at both ends of the pitch with the half-time
changes and that was something we lacked in general today. Isaac gets his
goal which is probably the only bit of class we produced all game and then
Tammy obviously gets the equaliser.
'I think we should be quite pleased with a point based on what we showed
in the game. We lacked a bit of quality and desire and our away form is
something we know hasn't been good enough. We need to improve that and
there's no better place to test ourselves than at West Ham in our next
away trip.'
Next up for the Academy is a trip to Leeds United in the third round of
the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday 2 December. The game is being shown live on
Chelsea TV and kick-off at Elland Road is at 7.05pm.
