Under-18s report: Brighton 1 Chelsea 4
Fri 9 Mar 2018
Our youngsters won their 10th game in a row in impressive fashion on the
south coast as they took a step closer to retaining their Under-18 Premier
League southern title.
The Seagulls were shot down in a four-minute blitz in the first half as
goals from Charlie Brown, Billy Gilmour and George McEachran earned a
healthy advantage for Jody Morris's league leaders. Brighton did not go
without opportunities of their own and hit the post before half-time,
though Clinton Mola's brilliant strike after an hour extinguished any
hopes of a comeback.
A late goal denied us a sixth consecutive clean sheet but our second
victory of the week puts us 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with
four games remaining.
Morris made two changes from our victory over Leicester City three days
previously, with Conor Gallagher starting among the substitutes following
a knock sustained against the Foxes and Martell Taylor-Crossdale absent.
The personnel changes brought with them a switch in system as the visitors
lined up with a 3-4-2-1 shape, spearheaded in attack by Brown. Nicolas Tie
lined up in goal behind an unchanged back three of Marcel Lavinier, Jack
Wakely and Marc Guehi, while Juan Castillo and Tariq Lamptey operated in
the wing-back positions. McEachran replaced Gallagher in midfield, albeit
more advanced alongside Tariq Uwakwe, with Mola and Gilmour handed
responsibilities deeper.
Morris bemoaned a slow start against Leicester earlier in the week, though
the driving south coast rain made it difficult for his young charges to
settle into their early rhythm and it was Brighton who created the game's
clearest opening chances. Ryan Longman fired the first shot at goal after
nine minutes of action, reacting quickest on the edge of the Chelsea box
after miscommunication between two defenders, though his low shot flew
beyond the far post.
Alex Cochrane was next to provide a threat for the hosts with a free-kick
fired into the box from the left, though Guehi read the danger well and
produced an excellent clearing header. Down the other end, Seagulls keeper
Tom McGill will have been trying to forget memories of last facing a
Chelsea side and conceding 13 goals at Cobham a year ago. The England
Under-17 international did well to claw away Uwakwe's curling free-kick as
the visitors grew stronger, before gathering another effort from the
midfielder at the second attempt.
Brown also went close with a header guided narrowly over before the
striker raced on to a clever forward pass to bear down on goal midway
through the first period. His initial effort was blocked by a brilliant
challenge from Hayden Roberts but the loose ball fell kindly for Brown and
he slotted it into the net to score for the fourth consecutive league
game.
The floodgates had arguably been open since before kick-off with the heavy
rain pouring down but Brown's opener provided the platform for Morris's
men to race into a 3-0 lead, with a further two goals added within four
minutes of the first. It was Brown again who proved influential in
doubling our advantage, the 18-year-old darting into the box and falling
under a clumsy, desperate challenge. Gilmour was authorised with
responsibilities from the spot and sent the keeper the wrong way with a
confident finish.
A third goal for the league leaders came within 60 seconds of Brighton
restarting play, a loose ball dropping invitingly for McEachran to strike
on the volley from just outside the box and place perfectly into the
bottom corner for his sixth of the campaign.
Wakely went close to adding a fourth with a header placed narrowly wide
following McEachran's delivery from the right, though Brighton refused to
give up and twice threatened to reduce the deficit before the break. A
left-sided spark was provided by Longman and he advanced threateningly
down the left channel, though Tie did well to narrow the angle quickly and
palmed the shot away to safety.
Matthew Everitt went even closer for Ian Buckman's side with a bending
left-footed attempt that beat Tie and looked destined for the bottom
corner but thumped the post and bounced away to safety.
The task of launching a second-half comeback was a tough one for the hosts
given our youngsters had not conceded a goal in their last five outings,
although both Guehi and Lavinier were forced into good defending after the
restart to preserve our clean sheet, the former clearing from near his own
goal-line before his centre-back partner produced an excellent sliding
block.
Uwakwe offered plenty of attacking impetus all evening and almost netted
the goal his efforts merited as he latched on to a ball in from the right,
swivelled instantly and fired a shot that whistled inches wide. A
free-kick from McEachran caused problems again before the hour mark as
three attacking players beat the offside trap to race on to a floated
delivery, though Guehi blazed high over the bar at the far post.
This was another flowing attacking display from our youngsters and they
soon hit four goals for the 10th time this season with undoubtedly the
strike of the night. An intricate move of passing and movement fashioned
the chance as Uwakwe teed up Mola and the midfielder hit an unstoppable
strike from 30 yards that arrowed perfectly into the top corner.
There was still work remaining for Chelsea and Tie stayed alert to make a
close-range save from Everitt following an attack down the right wing.
Brighton continued to press in possession but the visitors were confident
and precise in their use of the ball. Morris brought on Tushaun Walters as
one of his three changes and the forward jinked into the box with menace
shortly after his introduction, though McGill was down low to make the
stop.
Brown and Mola were also denied by the goalkeeper late on, while a
brilliant last-ditch block from Hamish Morrison prevented Mola adding to
his personal tally. However, there was disappointment for the visitors in
stoppage time as they conceded their first goal for a month when Dan
Cashman poked in on the line after a mistake from Tie.
It was an unfortunate end to another positive night for our youth team,
who will retain the southern title away at Arsenal if they can win that
game and beat Southampton three days beforehand.
