TORONTO 07 - Blown Away

Justine battled the gusty Serbian storm of Jelena Jankovic to win her 35th
career title, and her 6th trophy of the year. The match featured an
outrageous 18 minute, nine deuces stand off in the 11th game of the second
set on the Henin serve. Justine steered things to a conclusion for 7-6 (7-3)
7-5. The Rogers Cup center court crowd gave the duo a standing ovation for
what's surely to be ranked as one of the best matches of 2007. The Belgian
tennis queen will rest, and recover for a target take-over at the US OPEN in
one week's time.

There has only been one simple match between Justine and Jelana in their
career meetings, the rest were epic warrior struggles. As always it was not
only the superb hitting from both players, but the intensity, spirit and
sheer emotional drive on display that made this final a cut above the rest.
Jankovic began in a flash, and led 1-4 in the first set. Justine's
groundstrokes were fluctuating from brilliant 1-handed backhands to missed
forehands, but she crafted points away from Jelena to level proceedings to
4-4. Justine tussled Jelena into a tiebreaker and made a mockery of the
vanished Serbian 1-4 head start. The distant memory hung in center court as
Jankovic's smooth serves deserted her. Justine won the tiebreaker 7-3.


Jelena regrouped in the second set. The Serbian broke Justine, and looked to
have shifted momentum to no avail. Justine found her serves once more for a
2-2 score. The quality of tennis lifted to another level, and the audience
went wilder. Flag waving Serbians were out in full voice for their girl. Each
point was played as match point. The 11th game turned into an 18 minute
spectacle with Justine trying to break apart nine deuce games to close in for
the finish. But she still wasn't there- it took 6 championship points in 2
hours and 18 minutes to defeat Jankovoic. One blown away awe struck near
capacity center court at Rogers Cup, and a sweet blown kiss by Justine.


Final score 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 in 2hr and 18mins.
