Teenaged Rookie Ryu Stellar in Debut Outing

Hanwha Eagles rookie Ryu Hyun-jin made an impressive debut in the
Korea Baseball Organization League with the team’s 4-0 win over
the LG Twins in Seoul, Wednesday.

The 19-year-old lefty Ryu pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings allowing
three hits and striking out 10, becoming the fourth rookie hurler
to post the record in the league history. He also was the first
pitcher to win a debut game in four years, since Kim Jin-woo did
it for the Kia Tigers in 2002.

Choi Young-pil and Koo Dae-sung kept the Twins off the board for the
rest of the innings to seal the Eagles' victory. Another rookie, Yeon
Kyung-heum, smacked his first home run in the opening inning off Twins
starter Shim Soo-chang. Cho Won-woo hit a two-run double in the fifth
and Lee Do-hyung made another RBI single in the eighth.

In Pusan, the Lotte Giants in their first home game beat the SK
Wyverns 6-5.

Giants' new import Brian Myrow went 2-2 including a solo home run
in the fourth inning. The Wyverns gave their last-ditch threat in
the ninth producing three runs from back-to-back homers by Kim Jae
-hyun and Park Kyung-wan off Giants closer Lee Wang-ki, but reliever
Choi Dae-sung finished off the game striking out the next two batters.

The Samsung Lions beat the Hyundai Unicorns 4-2 after a 10-inning
thriller, handing their opponents a fourth straight loss in Suwon.
In the 10th inning in a 2-2 tie, Jin Kap-yong hit an RBI single and
Kim Dae-ik forced in another run to nail down the win.

In Kwangju, the Doosan Bears and the Tigers drew 1-1. Tigers' veteran
submariner Lee Kang-chul had his retirement ceremony before the game.
Playing 17 seasons, Lee was 152-112 with 53 saves in 602 games, with
an overall ERA of 3.29.
