Tuesday 1st January Premier League - Aston Villa 2 Spurs 1

2008 began in inauspicious style for Juande Ramos' merry men. A visit to
Villa Park for an 5:15pm kick-off on New Year's Day wouldn't be many teams'
first choice for ways to start the season, and so it proved. Having fallen
behind to a header from a corner, Jermain Defoe levelled with a spectacular
finish, before we fell behind to a header from a corner. Can anyone spot the
glaringly obvious problem?

Friday 5th January Reports suggest Hutton deal dead

Five days into the year, and the January transfer merry-go-round was very
much up and running, with rumours aplenty. Reports at this point suggested
that Alan Hutton had decided to stay at Rangers, and that the deal had fallen
through. As it turned out, all our Alan needed was a little persuading.

Saturday 5th January FA Cup 3rd Round - Spurs 2 Reading 2

Rather than a game of two halves, this was more a game of two players, as
Dimitar Berbatov Stephen Hunt scored all four goals between them. On the back
of the previous month's ten-goal thriller, the 'neutrals' would have been
hoping for more of the same, though most Spurs fans would have settled for a
dour one-nil win. In the end, we were forced to take the game back to the
Madejski, which served only to further clog up or already congested fixture
list.

Wednesday 9th January Carling Cup Semi Final - Arsenal 1 Spurs 1

I've covered this game in rather detailed fashion previously, and it's
probably worth reading that article, written in the build-up to the final
against Chelsea. But to summarise, though at the time the 1-1 seemed like an
opportunity squandered, in reality, it was merely the calm before the storm,
as Arsenal began to truly believe they needed merely to turn up to triumph in
such games.

Friday 11th January Ghaly completes Derby loan move

Another tedious transfer saga came to an inevitable conclusion, as Egyptian
misfit Hossam Ghaly finally bid us farewell. Ghaly's loan move to rock-bottom
Derby County was quite fitting, but he is now stuck in limbo yet again, after
returning to Spurs at the end of the season.

Saturday 12th January Premier League - Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

With so many irons in the fire, it was understandable that a trip to Stamford
Bridge fell fairly low on Ramos' list of priorities. Thus, a marginally
weakened Spurs eleven were swept aside by a determined Chelsea side, with a
fantastic Juliano Belletti strike opening the scoring before Shaun
Wright-Phillips sealed victory late on.

Tuesday 15th January FA Cup 3rd Round Replay - Reading 0 Spurs 1

Ramos' maintained his magnificent unbeaten cup streak with this victory over
a makeshift Reading side with far more pressing matters to contend with.
Robbie Keane's goal was enough to ensure progress, though it could and should
have been a far more emphatic victory.

Saturday 19th January Premier League - Spurs 2 Sunderland 0

A second routine victory over a struggling Premier League outfit followed
four days later, as we avenged our opening day defeat to Roy Keane's men.
Aaron Lennon scored just two minutes in, and our Keane sealed defeat for
their Keane in injury time, but this was a fairly one-sided encounter which
underlined the uphill battle the Wearsiders seemingly faced to stay in the
league.

Tuesday 22nd January Carling Cup Semi Final - Spurs 5 Arsenal 1

Again, I have written numerous reflections on this game, and none of them
have managed to fully encapsulate what this result meant. It doesn't matter
what anyone says about reserves or priorities or anything else. The fact is,
Arsenal got beat 5-1 by their North London rivals, and for all their
dominance over us in recent years, they never embarrassed us this much.

Sunday 27th January FA Cup 4th Round - Manchester United 3 Spurs 1

A lot of people looking back may assume this was a perfect example of the
morning after the night before, with Spurs distracted by thoughts of Wembley,
but that was certainly not the case. We led after 24 minutes through Keane,
and could even have had another before Carlos Tevez equalised. Even after
that the game remained even, and it was only when Michael Dawson conceded a
penalty and was sent off that the game swung irreversibly in United's favour.
In the context of what came thereafter, a win over United may have presented
us with a real chance of a domestic cup double, but that would also have
meant having to face Arsenal once more, and perhaps it's just as well that we
are able to drag those bragging rights out all the way until August at least.

Monday 28th January Woodgate signs in £7m deal

No one has been more criticial of Damien Comolli than myself, but there is no
doubting the quality of this acquisition. Woodgate's ability was never up for
discussion, but there were huge question marks regarding his history with
injuries. Nonetheless, Woodgate improved the team in the position where we
were most vulnerable, and he has, thus far, been relatively injury-free,
touch wood of course.

Wednesday 30th January Premier League - Everton 0 Spurs 0
Hutton signs, Routledge joins Villa

As dull a game as anyone is ever likely to witness, though the result itself
was rather a decent one for Spurs. A clean sheet in itself is always an
achievement where Spurs are concerned, and with Everton gunning for a top
four finish, there was even more reason to be proud.

The wheeling and dealing was now in full swing prior to the transfer window
slamming shut, and contrary to previous reports, Alan Hutton did eventually
put pen to paper. Meanwhile, Wayne Routledge ended his unsuccessful stint in
the Spurs reserves by leaving to joining Aston Villa reserves.

Thursday 31st January Defoe joins Portsmouth, Gilberto signs, Stalteri
and Gardner loaned out

There may have been rumours for long periods of time, but Jermain Defoe's
departure for Portsmouth still left me somewhat taken aback. With a Wembley
cup final just around the corner, I was sure that Defoe would stick around
for the final few months of the season, but alas, the lure of first-team
football was too much to resist, and so it was that Spurs said goodbye to one
of the most prodigious talents in English football. Defoe went some way
towards proving his point by scoring eight goals in his first seven
Portsmouth games.

The signing of Brazilian full-back Gilberto did not particularly move me to
be perfectly frank, and his debut performance against PSV will go down as one
of the least impressive in Spurs history, but his showings towards the end of
the season suggested there was still hope. The loaning out of Paul Stalteri
to Fulham made perfect sense for both clubs, Anthony Gardner to Everton less
so. Gardner did not make a single appearance for the Toffees, whilst Stalteri
contributed to Fulham's great escape. Both players have since returned to
White Hart Lane, though one would assume that is only a temporary homecoming..
