Adam Silver offers up 1-16 seeding compromise for possible playoff changes

Silver mentioned still having the best eight teams from each conference making
the playoffs, but then seeding those teams 1-16. In that case, if the top two
teams were from the same conference it would set up a possible Finals meeting
.

"You also would like to have a format where your two best teams are ultimately
going to meet in The Finals," Silver said. "You could have a situation where
the top two teams in the league are meeting in the conference finals or somewh
ere else. So we're going to continue to look at that. It's still my hope that
we're going to figure out ways.

As has been the case with other 1-16 seeding proposals, there is an issue of t
ravel. With the current playoff format of 2-2-1-1-1 in all rounds, a long firs
t- or second-round long series between teams on opposite coasts would create a
n unfavorable situation. Also it would require a more balanced schedule so cer
tain teams didn't have an advantage in playoff qualification during the regula
r season.

如果分成1～16種子，按照現在2-2-1-1-1的主客場賽制，對戰球隊若在東西不同區，假
設這個系列賽打得很漫長，那雙方在來回移動上會有所影嚮，打起來會很累，且在第一輪
第二輪就會出現這樣的狀況。

"Maybe ultimately you have to add even more days to the season to spread it ou
t a little bit more to deal with the travel," Silver said. "Maybe air travel w
ill get better. All things we'll keep looking at."

也許最終就得增加比賽天數，這樣才可以分散賽程，以應對漫長的飛行移動時間。

At this point it is just conceptual; there are no plans for a vote. However, i
t is the furthest Silver has gone in altering the postseason format since beco
ming commissioner.

"That is something that's gotten serious attention -- not just recently, but o
ver the last few years at the league office," Silver said.
