"In my opinion the child in the best part of the neighbourhood doesn't learn
responsibility because the parents take the responsibility so England must go
to the inner city where people can't afford anything because that kid is
rough and tough and mentally sound."

"I don't think Britain wants a top women's player, period. And the reason I
say that is because of what I said five or six years ago in order to get a
good player in this country (Britain) or America we are going to have to do
something like the Russians did and go out to the inner cities and get those
people who are really interested in playing.

"A kid who has a chauffeur, a nice swimming pool, mother and father makes
lots of the money... that child ain't interesting in playing tennis because
their life is already constructed.

"You have to go to the inner city and get a child who wants to fight and
they'll give you everything they can give. "

"I think you have to teach a child to diversify their lives, when tennis is
over where do they go? Let's take a look at players... what is John McEnroe
doing? Announcing tennis. What is Chris Evert doing, Navratilova钠hey never
learned to do anything else with their lives.

"If you can imagine being five or six years old and you get to be 40 years
old and older and you're still in tennis, something is wrong with what we're
doing.

"And what we're doing wrong in tennis is that we don't care about education.
Now Venus and Serena they have a great education and that's why they can go
out and do so many more things and I think they're criticised because Serena
can go out and make more money making movies in two movies than the whole
year playing tennis.

"That doesn't seem like something you should be criticised, it seems that
people should say 'Let me go and diversify my life, this is the way'."

"I never allowed my kids to have role models in sport, I'd never let that
happen. God should be your role model and if not God then you become your own
role model.

"Why should role models be singers, most of them are on drugs, most of them
are going from woman to woman. Why are our kids being given the worst
examples? It should be the school teachers or the preacher. Saying someone
running around here with a tennis racket is your role model doesn't make
sense."

"First and foremost I'm a master planner. Before they were born I knew they
would be tennis players."
