Red Sox show no interest in Pedro Martinez encore
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - This offseason, the Red Sox [team stats] took chances
on two veteran starting pitchers coming off injuries, signing John Smoltz and
Brad Penny to low-risk deals and hoping for high rewards.
But earlier this week, the club showed it had no interest in signing a third:
Pedro Martinez.
Baseball sources said Martinez’ representatives approached the Red Sox
earlier this week to determine if the club was a possible fit for the
37-year-old right-hander. Martinez pitched brilliantly for the Sox for seven
seasons (1998-2004), posting a record of 117-37, and winning two American
League Cy Young awards.
...
News reports last week from the Dominican, where Martinez has been training,
had him hitting the low-90s with his fastball and eager to play.
Martinez has drawn at least moderate interest from a number of major league
clubs, including the Dodgers, Pirates and Indians, though none of these teams
has made a a firm offer. When the Mets signed Livan Hernandez as insurance
for their rotation earlier this month, it effectively slammed the door on
Martinez returning to the team.
