about Guardado

There are teams out there (like the Yankees, for instance) who keep reporting
that Guardado isn't available. But it now appears he simply isn't available
to teams that can't give Seattle what it wants -- which is multiple,
big-league-ready young players. But an official of another team told the
Stark Market he now believes there's a better chance that Guardado will get
traded than most teams believed a week ago. The Mariners have been telling
clubs that several teams have picked up the pace on their talks about
Guardado. And two of them are believed to be the White Sox and Mets. One AL
executive says: "A few teams have stepped up -- and if they step up to the
right level, they'll do something (with Guardado)."

It has long been assumed that if Winn got traded this week, it would be to
the Yankees, as their designated center-field upgrade. Now, though, those
plans have changed. If Winn does end up in the Bronx, it would be as a left
fielder, with Hideki Matsui moving to center, because the Yankees just don't
see him as a better defensive center fielder than Bubba Crosby. In fact, one
baseball man who spoke with the Yankees described their interest in Winn now
as only "lukewarm." So his most likely possible destination now just might be
St. Louis, which is still combing the landscape for outfield help, with both
Reggie Sanders and Larry Walker on the disabled list.
