M's sign first-round draft pick Jeff Clement
The Mariners have signed catcher Jeff Clement, their first-round
selection in the draft and the third pick overall.
Clement, 21, recently won the Johnny Bench Award, given to the
best catcher in college baseball. He hit .347 with 13 home runs
as a junior at USC. A native of Marshalltown, Iowa, the 6-foot-1,
210-pound Clement also led his Little League team to the 1996
World Series, and his high school team to the Iowa state title in
2002, hitting.509.
