Agassi not entirely satisfied

Defending Australian Open champion Andre Agassi had one of the easier
Grand Slam quarter-final outings of his career on Tuesday when Frenchman
Sebastien Grosjean retired hurt, but the American wasn't totally satisfied
with his comfortable progression.
No.4 seed Agassi was in complete control of the match when Grosjean pulled
a muscle in his groin, and though the No.9 seed tried to battle on,
he walked to the net while trailing 6-2 2-0 and informed the umpire and
Agassi that he could not go on.
Having extended his winning run at Melbourne Park to 26 matches with the
early finish, after winning the title the previous three times he has
contested the Open - in 2000, 2001 and last year - Agassi was disappointed
not to have played three sets.
"Yeah, I would have preferred to finish the match, no question," said
the 33-year-old. "Not for any reasons of concern. It's not that I feel like
now I'm sort of not prepared. But you just don't want any match to end
that way."
"I felt like at different stages of the match have sort of different
personalities to them. You try to rise to the occasion for what's required.
Starting a match is a heck of a lot different than finishing one. It's
always nice to play a complete match."
Agassi reiterated though that the premature end to the contest did not give
him any major worries about his form ahead of a semi-final match-up with
either fellow American and world No.1 Andy Roddick, or unseeded Russian
Marat Safin, the 2002 Open runner-up.
"I don't find myself concerned about anything," Agassi added. "Up to that
point in the match, I was feeling really good. So that's really all you
can assess. You can't read into it more than that."
Unaware that Grosjean was battling the ailment, but having noticed that
he was going for his shots more in an attempt to end points quickly,
Agassi is already looking forward to the clash between Roddick and Safin.
"That's going to be a great match tonight, if both guys are ready
physically and mentally, it should be a battle," Agassi said. "It's going
to be who plays better on the big points, which is going to be nice to watch."
As for his chances of lifting the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for a
fifth time on Sunday, Agassi says his preparation cannot be faulted, and
he is again loving playing in a tournament which he believes suits him.
"I've had success because I play well here," he said. "It's not that I
play well because I necessarily had the success. That's the reason why,
because it's a great place for me to play and compete."
"I kind of try to come down here ready and prepared, which always gives
my confidence a boost when I come down here knowing I'm ready to go as
opposed to dealing with some sort of body ache or feeling not rested or
not prepared for."
