In quite possibly the most counterproductive endorsement in history,
Andre Agassi appeared on TV screens across America in 1990 on behalf
of the Canon Rebel camera. With his golden mane puffed up like a
hair-metal singer, Agassi blithely declared that "Image is Everything."
The tag line, which stuck in your head like a bad jingle, was the
perfect description of Agassi's early career. At the time, he hadn't
won a major title but was No. 1 in the fame game, living large with
endorsement contracts and enough sports cars to open a dealership.
It took Agassi nearly a decade to overcome the ridicule that the
campaign elicited, and you have to wonder if, having to do it all over
again, he would agree to send such a compromising message, no matter
how much fame and money it yielded.

As Andre Agassi toed the baseline and prepared to serve for his first
Roland Garros title, he wasn't just trying to pull off a miracle comeback
from two sets down or add another trophy to his overstuffed case. He was
attempting to put a whole period of his life behind him. Eight years and
hundreds of haircuts earlier, Agassi had been brought to tears on this
court after losing a five-set final to his American junior rival and
supposed inferior, Jim Courier. In the ensuing years, Agassi had shaped
up and won the other three majors but had never again reached the pinnacle
in Paris. He made the most of this chance, holding serve to beat Andrei
Medvedev 6-4 in the fifth set and become the first man since Rod Laver
to win all four Grand Slam titles in his career.
