Nets Starting to Gain Consistency, and Ground

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Feb. 27 —
In the aftermath of distractions caused by the All-Star Game break
and a week of trade speculation, the Nets have quietly put together
a three-game winning streak in which they have finally shown signs
of promise.

They beat the Washington Wizards, 113-101, on Tuesday night at
Continental Arena for another victory in their surprisingly difficult
battle to make the playoffs.

The Nets (28-30) are tied with the Orlando Magic for seventh place
in the Eastern Conference standings. The Nets and the Magic are

teams in each conference make the playoffs.

The Nets are also learning that they can rely on their role players
late in games. Forward Bostjan Nachbar scored 23 points against
the Wizards, 16 in the fourth quarter. The Nets also hit a franchise
record 16 3-pointers.

Kidd had a stellar stretch during the third quarter in which he

seconds, allowing the Nets to take a 68-62 advantage midway through
the quarter.

1. Jason Kidd gave the entire arena a scare with 7:07 left when he
fell to the floor in pain. It turned out to be a freakish accident
in which Kidd, while trying to help up Vince Carter, slipped and
did a split. He clutched his groin and rolled on the floor for a
few moments as fans stood and watched silently. But he finished
the game without a problem. "Eddie House thought I was doing a
James Brown," Kidd said.

his return to action is still uncertain. Jefferson has been out
since Jan. 22 because of ankle surgery.

3. Small forward Antoine Wright did not play Tuesday night because
