The Debrief: Away run continues as Chilwell and James cut through

21 Nov 2021

In Saturday's early game, Chelsea bounced back from a rare two points
dropped in our previous match, at home against Burnley before the
international break, with our excellent away form this season continuing.
We take a look here at the data and key points from the contest…

The 3-0 win over Leicester City keeps us at the top of the Premier League
table and when it comes to away results, Thomas Tuchel's side has three
more points on the road than achieved by Liverpool, Manchester City and
West Ham United this season.

== Strong on the road ==

Liverpool remain the only side to have stopped the Blues winning away in
the league in 2021/22 and are the only team to have scored at home against
us, that goal coming from the penalty spot. We have conceded three fewer
goals away from home than Man City who have the next meanest defence in
other teams' stadiums.

Chelsea have found the net 13 times on our travels and the manner of the
opener against Leicester came as no great surprise.

We went into the game at the King Power Stadium knowing no side had
conceded more headed goals in the Premier League this season than
Leicester's four, the same number as we had scored with our head prior to
Saturday, again a league high. Add onto that Toni Rudiger's penchant for
finding the Foxes net and his near-post success that made it 1-0 was a
good bet for first goal.

50% - Exactly 50% of Antonio Rüdiger's eight Premier League goals have
come against Leicester (4), the only Premier League side the German has
netted more than once against in the competition. Foxy.

The goal was one of three aerial challenges won by the German in the
match, a figure matched only by his compatriot Kai Havertz.

Scorer of the second goal and another who has hit the Leicester net before
for Chelsea, N'Golo Kante, was named man of the match by fans on The 5th
Stand and as well as his great strike, he was typically effective in
winning the ball, with two successful tackles and one interception made,
while clearly playing in a more forward role than Jorginho, as shown by
the average positions of the starting line-up.

Kante is no.7, Hudson-Odoi is no.20

Callum Hudson Odoi, despite his starting position on the left, was our
most central and most advanced attacker.

== Wing-backs continue to shine ==

Chelsea fans have quickly grown used to the advanced and tucked-in
movement in attack of wing-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James, although
even though they frequently showed up in or near the Leicester penalty
area, there was variety to their attacking play.

The pair supplied more crosses than anyone else, with six from Chilwell
and three from James. It was Chilwell's corner that was headed in by
Rudiger for his goal.

Former Leicester full-back Chilwell supplied the most key passes leading
to goal chances with three. James, second-half substitute Hakim Ziyech and
Jorginho played two each.

Chilwell drew a game-high four fouls and along with Kante had the most
shots. All three of the Frenchman's were on target, including his goal.
Chilwell hit the bar in the first half and his one on-target was
well-saved by Kasper Schmeichel in the second half.

Although Kante had plenty to do before scoring, the pass to him by James
is the England international's fourth assist of the season. Only strikers
Mohamed Salah and Michail Antonio have more goal involvements (goals
scored and assists) than his eight.

Plenty of team play in the build-up to the goal that made it 2-0

No-one was more involved in the game than James with his 102 touches, four
successful dribbles and most tackles won with three.

James was prominent both inside and wide

The force going forward that is the Chelsea wing-backs ensured their
counterparts from Leicester were largely pinned back near their
back-three, as can be seen below, as is the gap that was often there
between the central defence and midfield, exploited by Kante for his goal.

== Second-half switches and chances ==

Leicester made two changes at half-time and altered their shape upfront,
and it had an effect. Having failed to conjure up a single shot before the
interval, they managed four in the second half, three of which tested
Edouard Mendy, with two of those by half-time sub James Maddison.

Their share of possession increased from 31 per cent to 45 but
importantly, they could not stem the Chelsea tide when we went forward.

The Blues had seven attempts at goal in the second half compared with nine
in the first, and were denied three further goals by the offside flag.
Ziyech celebrated his 50th appearance for Chelsea with the assist for
Christian Pulisic to make it 3-0.

At the back, Thiago Silva was a controlling influence with the highest
pass completion figure of the starters - 96.8 per cent from 94 passes.
Trevoh Chalobah was next for passes with 77.

Thiago Silva played important passes into our opponents' half

Mendy continues to top the clean sheet table with seven and in 49 games
under Tuchel, there have been 30 shut-outs.

The Blues have won our last four away league games without conceding, our
best such run for 13 years.

Despite winning the equivalent fixture last season, Foxes' boss Brendan
Rodgers' overall record against the club where he once worked in our
Academy is his poorest against any Premier League club. With that one
victory comes seven draws and six defeats against the Blues.

Chelsea have nine wins from our last 13 visits to Leicester in all
competitions.
