Kawhi Leonard wants a super team, superstardom can wait

It was about a week ago when Shaquille O’Neal took the conversation to a new
level.

The topic: Is Kawhi Leonard a superstar in today’s NBA, on a Spurs team
known to loathe individualism.

At halftime of the Spurs’ contest with the New Orleans Pelicans, O’Neal,
one of the best centers in NBA history, now an analyst for TNT, finally put
any doubt about Leonard’s status to rest.

“America recognize this young player right here as a superstar,” said O’
Neal. “Not a star, a superstar right up there with LeBron (James) and Steph
Curry and all those guys. I love this guy’s game. He doesn’t celebrate. He
plays the right way. And listen, he made the San Antonio Big Three take a
[back seat]. We need to start recognizing this young man as a superstar.”

Leonard would finish that game with 30 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and
two steals. A few nights later he had a 25-point, 13-rebound, six assist
performance against the Sacramento Kings. And most recently he had 29 points,
seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks against the Chicago
Bulls. The most important thing about Leonard’s stats in those games: the
Spurs won.

This is Leonard’s mindset: winning basketball games and more championships.
The Spurs accomplishing those feats is the the only way he’ll agree when you
ask him about being a superstar.

Told of O’Neal’s comments, which is the way many around the NBA feel,
Leonard was humbled, but not sold.

“This is not where I want to be,” he told the Express-News. “I’m striving
for team goals. Once that time comes, I’ll be happy, but I’m not just
focused on myself becoming a superstar. I want to make us the best team – a
super team.”

It’s not enough the Leonard has received accolades and praise of the last
three seasons. He knows there is more to be done, and not through stats.

Leonard does lead the Spurs in scoring (20.9 points) and following the win
over the Bulls on Friday night, he’s averaging 24.8 points on 50 percent
shooting, 8.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals in March.

“I just feel like the league is so based on scoring points,” said Leonard.
“I could have done this last year, too, but you start averaging 20 points,
everybody gets a big rise. But if you see how people affect the game (on both
ends of the court) that’s what makes them an elite player.”

But even if Leonard, 24, isn’t playing attention to the superstar talk,
others notice.
Asked about Leonard’s status, former NBA coach and current NBA on TNT
analyst Mike Fratello said: “He certainly is one of the premier players in
our league. I don’t know if it matters if he has the label of superstar or
not. As long as he keeps doing what he’s doing, and you have a team that
could win 70 games that he’s playing on. I think he’s meeting a lot of the
criteria.”

過去三季的好表現和成就不能讓Leonard感到滿足，他知道他還有很多要改進的地方，有

another.

“He’s a superstar,” said Miller. “He’s been to the finals a couple of
times. Finals MVP. All-Star game. He’s improved every year. I mean’s he a
guy that, from my couple days here, I see he has some worth ethic. And he
guards his position. I think a lot of players respect players that can not
only put the ball in the basket, but they can guard the best player on the
other team night in and night out. And it looks like he doesn’t complain
about it. He takes on the challenge. There are only a few guys in the league
that do that.”

Added Miller: “He definitely has the tools to be a superstar for 15 more
years.”

Former NBA player and current ESPN NBA analyst Jalen Rose has followed Leonard
’s progress closer than most, as both were coached in college by Steve
Fisher. When told Leonard’s attitude regarding superstardom was more
collective than individual, Rose wasn’t surprised.

“Maturity,” said Rose. “That’s how he’s always has been. … In team
sport, that goes hand in hand. What has changed is the marketing and
promotion of the individual. The star player becomes the headline like in
OKC, but the story is still the team like in San Antonio.”

Asked if Leonard is a top three player right now, Rose said: “The best three
players in the league are Steph, LeBron, flip a coin for KD (Kevin Durant)
and Kawhi. I still have to take KD (at number three), Kawhi is fourth. But
Kawhi is coming. He’s there.”

while discussing his status as a superstar. He had just come off his fifth
straight game of 20-plus points after the Spurs beat the Kings. Leonard
fought the superstar label the entire discussion.

But if Leonard isn’t a superstar right now, then what is he?

“It’s just one season,” said Leonard. “I got to kept going to become a
superstar. Trying to get there. Just taking stepping stones, waiting my time.
”

While he waits, Leonard is in the process of helping create that super Spurs
team. Once that goal is achieved, superstardom will follow.
