Kidd Will Understand if Carter Leaves the Nets - 布魯克林籃網 Brooklyn Nets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., May 21 —

Three summers ago, Kenyon Martin was a free agent chasing a big payday.
The Nets balked, and Jason Kidd fumed.

In six weeks, Vince Carter will stand where Martin once did — weighing the
joys of playing with Kidd against financial concerns. Perhaps only Carter

” Kidd said Monday. “I would loved to have K-Mart back, but that didn’t
happen. Whatever happens, you wish him the best. Business gets in the way,
and as you get older, you understand that.”

At age 34, Kidd is wiser than he was in July 2004, when the Nets sent Martin
— his No. 1 sidekick — to Denver in a sign-and-trade deal. At the time, the
Nets were only a year removed from their second trip to the N.B.A. finals.
The move angered Kidd enough to fuel speculation that he would demand a trade
himself.

season but has the option to terminate the contract by July 1.

The Nets and Carter will discuss a contract extension between now and then.
If they cannot come to terms, Carter will probably opt out and let the market

“That’s between him and Rod now,” Kidd said, referring to Rod Thorn, the

As the Nets’ franchise player, Kidd has the standing to make his voice heard
in the front office. But he seems determined not to involve himself this time.

are used to give players some off-season instructions and a sense of what to
expect next season.

When Carter met with reporters afterward, however, he was profoundly vague
about his future. He answered about a dozen questions about his potential

Carter said it was not a given that he would exercise his opt-out clause,

“I really, honestly, haven’t put any thought into it,” he said.

Carter, who averaged 25.2 points this season, is among the 20 highest-paid
players in the N.B.A. — a place he has earned as one of the league’s most
explosive scorers. But Carter is 30 and a nine-year veteran who could soon be
on the downside of his career. The Nets have not advanced past the second
round of the playoffs since he arrived.

“We hope to sign Vince,” Thorn said. “His public posture is that he would
like to stay here, but obviously he would like to get the best contract he
could possibly get. Sometimes those two things mesh, and sometimes they don’
t.”

Thorn said Carter’s departure would not prompt him to trade Kidd or
otherwise overhaul the roster.

“I don’t know that it has anything to do with what we would do with the
rest of our team, other than we obviously would be looking for a 2-guard,”
Thorn said. “As to how it impacts Jason Kidd, no, it doesn’t impact him
one way or the other.”
