Justine Untroubled in Opener

Justine Henin-Hardenne made short and unforgiving work of her first round
opponent on Centre Court today. Kicking off the afternoon's proceedings on
Wimbledon's main stage – a change to the traditional Tuesday opening fixture
of the Ladies' champion, thanks to yesterday's deluge – Henin despatched
Meng Yuan of China 6-0, 6-1 in just 56 minutes to secure her place in the
second round.

It could hardly have been a greater contrast than the Belgian's experience 12
months ago. Then as now she came to SW19 with the French Open title under her
belt, only to be dumped out of Wimbledon at the first hurdle by the Greek
Eleni Daniilidou, making Henin the first reigning Roland Garros champion in
history to suffer that ignominy.

But Yuan was no match for Henin, and the signs are the latter has progressed
smoothly from Paris – where she did not drop a set on her way to the title –
via her triumph at Eastbourne last week, to the All England Club this.

Since making the Wimbledon final at 19 in 2001, her career has been a mixture
of glorious success in major tournaments – she has won five Slam titles –
and long period of injury and illness.

But if she should lift the Venus Rosewater Dish 11 days hence, it could also
take her back to the world number one spot.

Yuan seemed to be getting off to an encouraging start, looking all set to
open the match by holding to love. But from 0-40 the Belgian moved quickly
into gear and promptly broke. If that was not sufficiently psychologically
crushing, in the third game she replied to a Yuan dropshot with a far better
one of her own.

Yuan is a baseliner who favours hardcourts, and grass in general seemed a new
and unsettling experience for the 20-year-old Chinese – on one occasion she
tried sliding along it, in the manner of clay, and came to a juddering halt.
Such are the potential pitfalls for those who make their Wimbledon debut on
the Centre Court .

Henin, on the other hand, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the workout, galloping
happily about the court and swinging her way through a range of shots on her
way to a victory which always had routine written all over it.

At 0-3 Yuan managed to take her opponent to deuce, but an especially savage
forehand saw Henin back to safe ground. Come to think of it, never mind the
signature Henin backhand, today the savage forehand proved horribly effective
time and time again.

Henin experienced only one moment of embarrassment when she held three set
points for the first set. Her much-praised backhand went astray, and then she
delivered two successive double faults before wrapping up the set without the
loss of any games.


Yuan, currently ranked 99 and thus among the eight Chinese women inside the
top 100, is one of the rising Chinese being groomed for the Beijing Olympics
of 2008. She is certainly on the way up, having finished 2005 ranked 153, but
Henin was far too good for her. The crowd offered warm applause when she
finally got her name on the scoreboard at 4-1 in the second, but it was way
too late.

At 5ft 6in, Yuan may be one of the few women in tennis as short as Henin, but
today it was the Belgian who was walking tall.
