PARIS, France - One of the most dominant clay court players of all time
stepped back onto her greatest stage and, like always, was nothing short of
awesome. Facing an opponent who was really on her game, Justine Henin was
better, beating Tsvetana Pironkova in a high-quality two-setter, 64 63.

Henin had played the big-hitting Pironkova three times before and had
struggled against her, rallying from a set and 3-1 down to win their last
match, on her home turf in Antwerp two years ago. And the Bulgarian really did
take it to her again in Paris, belting her big groundstrokes and running down
anything she could. But Henin had a phenomenal winners-to-errors ratio - 31 to
19 - and each time things got close, the former world No.1 kicked it up a gear.



"I was feeling very happy just to be on center court. It's something I
wasn't expecting again," Henin said after her first match in Paris since 2007.
"From when I woke up until when I was walking onto the court, I didn't really
know what to expect and how I was going to deal with my emotions. At that time,
I felt like I had never played on that court, even though I've played on it so
many times.



"As soon as I walked in and was into the match, I felt a lot of things
coming back. It was fantastic to share this again with the crowd as once again
they gave me great support. It was an honor for me to be scheduled on center
court."



Henin came back to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at the beginning of the
season and has since worked her way back to No.23 in the world - she is the
No.22 seed here, given the withdrawal of countrywoman Kim Clijsters. But many
would rightfully place her as one of the favorites for the French Open title,
even the favorite, given her previous results on the terre battue.

Tuesday's win against Pironkova was Henin's 22nd straight win at Roland
Garros, with 21 in a row coming between 2005 and 2007, her three straight titles
here - the only woman in the Open Era to take three straight apart from Monica
Seles. Henin also won the 2003 title, making it four titles total. Also, she
has now won 37 straight sets at the tournament - the longest streak in the Open
Era and three away from Helen Wills Moody's all-time record of 40.
