Henin-Hardenne is simply the best

She may not be as "sexy" as Maria Sharapova, as endearing as Amelie Mauresmo
or as mysterious as Serena Williams, but last week in Dubai, the gritty
Justine Henin-Hardenne proved once again that when healthy, she's the best
player in women's tennis.

In a frantic week, not to mention inclement weather, Henin ended up on top
once again — besting Sharapova 7-5, 6-2 in the final. Five other Slam
winners made hay at the tournament, but when the trophy was raised, the likes
of Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, Svetlana Kuznetsova and
Sharapova could only look up at the diminutive Belgian.

The introverted 23-year-old nearly ruined her public persona after quitting
against Mauresmo during the Australian Open final due to stomach pain,
leaving Mauresmo with little to celebrate in her maiden voyage to her first
Slam crown.

But since her mother passed away when she was just 12 years old, Henin has
never been one to worry about making friends or impressing the public. She's
about staying loyal to her very small circle of confidantes and posting
victories.

Henin says she never should have competed in the Australian Open final
because she was too sick and taking a risk with her life. But don't expect
her to apologize to Mauresmo or anyone else. She believes that she did the
right thing and won't hear that she may have been in the wrong.

"I cannot stop people thinking something about me, but I know the way I am;
and I'm totally fine with the fact that I left the court," she said. "Some
people understand and some don't. That's life. You can't make everyone happy
and can't make everyone like you."

But if you are as talented and determined as the all-courter, you can make
everyone bow down to you on court. Since returning to the tour last spring
after struggling with a debilitating virus, Henin-Hardenne has won seven of
the 12 tournaments she's played in and reached two other finals. In the other
three tournaments where she lost early, she wasn't close to 100 percent
healthy.

She's not only fearless and somewhat mean-spirited but owns nearly every shot
in the book and isn't afraid to bring out her big guns when the chips on the
line. She's 4-1 against Sharapova and has won their last two meeting on the
hardcourts. She has tripped up the fading Davenport time and time again, and
outside of her Australian Open loss, has done just fine against Mauresmo, too.

The only player she hasn't had great success against as of late has been Kim
Clijsters, who she once owned and who is now out with another injury.

If, as expected, Henin goes deep at Indian Wells and in Miami in March, she
should be holding the No.1 ranking again. No one except her husband
Pierre-Yves and her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, will be there to celebrate with
her, but that matters little to Henin-Hardenne, who is only really concerned
about satisfying her own expectations.

"I was feeling very down after the Australian Open final, but overall my
beginning of the year has been almost perfect when I think where I was a few
months ago," she said after thrashing Sharapova. "I fought very hard, and I'm
proud of the fact that I showed I'm a real competitor and stayed positive the
whole time."
