New York Coach Mike D'Antoni says Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing, credited
with helping sharpen the play of Orlando all-star center Dwight Howard this
season, isn't expected to be on his Knicks coaching staff when he finishes
selecting it.
D'Antoni told Newsday's Alan Hahn that Ewing isn't likely to be interested in
joining his staff.
Newsday, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, said Ewing is upset
that new Knicks President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh did not get
in touch with him when Walsh was searching for a head coach for the team.
Ewing, who also has worked with the Houston Rockets' Yao Ming on former
coach Jeff Van Gundy's staff, would like to become the head coach of an NBA
team. Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy had recommended before D'Antoni was hired
that the Knicks consider Ewing for their head-coaching job.
"I don't even know the situation or anything," D'Antoni told Newsday.
"I've got like 200 people that I need to go through, so the process is long,
and we're just trying to get the best. [Ewing's] a great coach and he's done
a great job, but we're just trying to get the best for what works for us."
D'Antoni might have a chance to talk with some of those candidates next week
at the NBA Predraft Camp in Orlando.
D'Antoni is expected to hire his brother Dan, and another member of his
Phoenix Suns staff, Phil Weber, as assistants, and Herb Williams is expected
to remain
